I started watching Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara about a week and a half ago, then stopped due to a shortage of time and not being in the right mood-normally, I get an escapist kick out of watching rich people have fun in places I can't afford to visit, but with some high-stress things going on at work, the need to straighten out some paperwork issues with my mortgage company, dealing with tax season, etc, watching Javed Akhtar's son lecture Rakesh Roshan's son about the horrors of overwork in the middle of sunny Spain kind of stuck in my craw. So I set it to one side.
In the meantime, the MCF developed a random yen to see Special 26 again, and I was happy to oblige. People who see themselves as working stiffs out to put stupid rich people in their place by conning them was a storyline more suited to my mood. No huge surprises on this viewing; I think I was mostly struck by how much more work the film puts into selling the girl's side of the romance track (minimalistic though that plot element is) than selling the guy's side. It's not just Kajal having a more emotionally expressive character or being more enthused about this aspect of the story.* Kaun Mera and Mujh Mein Tu put a lot of effort into showing the viewer Priya's impression of Ajju as this strong, mysterious figure, but the only impressions we're given of her from his POV (mostly from Gori Mukhde Peh) boil down to: she's cute, she's silly, it would be fun to show her a good time.
Later, after taxes and mortgages had been sorted and work got a little less stressful, I finished ZNMD and liked it better than when I started out. (Although the dvd seized up during a key sequence where Katrina and Hrithik promenade around in the middle of the night because Farhan and the Spanish girl kind of want the apartment to themselves, so I felt like I couldn't judge the main romance arc properly). It is an solid vehicle for three somewhat less-than-prolific actors,** it's a great travelogue that makes you feel like you're RIGHT THERE with the characters on their adventures, it gives us a whole eight or nine minutes of Katrina Kaif successfully impersonating a responsible adult, two of the songs are actually pretty good.
*it seemed to me from the promotional interviews I saw for the film that she was something of a fangirl with a crush towards Akshay, and although he seemed to like her okay as a person, he wasn't comfortable with the idea of her as an onscreen love interest. Or was still in shock from the realization that he had been making movies long enough for the current crop of cute young actresses to have grown up watching him onscreen.
**I like Abhay and Hrithik in general but they don't make a lot of movies, and they don't get around to making things that sound interesting to me very often. Farhan was good in this, although Ranbir, who was supposedly interested in doing the role and annoyed when the director offered it to her brother instead (nepotism working AGAINST a Kapoor...how often does that happen???), would probably have made it funnier.

I'd expect that Javed Akhtar's son *approves* of overwork! Ranbir wanted to play second fiddle to Hrithrik? Come to think of it, 2011 might have been the last time that Ranbir's career was far enough behind Hrithrik's for it to be reasonable for Ranbir to take second billing behind him. So we lost a chance to see them together, and now we likely never will. Dancelover [snip] watching Javed Akhtar's son lecture Rakesh Roshan's son about the horrors of overwork
Farhan was good in this, although Ranbir, who was supposedly interested in doing the role and annoyed when the director [Zoya] offered it to her brother instead (nepotism working AGAINST a Kapoor...how often does that happen???), would probably have made it funnier.

it gives us a whole eight or nine minutes of Katrina Kaif successfully impersonating a responsible adult LOL line of the day. Much as I like Ranbir, I actually think I'd prefer Farhan in that role. Ranbir seems to go into autopilot mode a bit when playing the self-centred lazy/spoilt boy roles (which, tbf, he seems to have done a lot), and there are a couple of scenes(the ones involving Hrithik's phone, for eg) where I think he would have hammed it up to the hilt. I like that Farhan came across more as an impulsive character, rather than a thoughtless one.

Goodness, I absolutely LOVED Farhan in that role, and the scene with his character's dad impressed me no end. I can't imagine Ranbir in his stead. I watched Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. I liked aspects of it, but it was a bit meandering. Surprisingly less-than-coherent storytelling from Bhardwaj. Good performances, though. The sinister politician woman was a bit over the top, but I kind of liked the way she put over her performance anyway.

I believe Ranbir was meant for Abhay´s role ? He was offered and did not want Abhay's role, supposedly, while what he wanted was either Farhan's role or Hrithik's, and he did understand that his chances of getting Hrithik's role were slim. That's the story I'd heard, anyway. Might or might not be true. (Post edited due to sounding overly abrupt. Sorry about that.)

Here in the Southern US, earlier in the week we had a snow day, so the kids and I re-watched Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. It was fun for me to rewatch it and my 8yr. old said "It was so dramatic!"

Just showed the More Casual Fan Zindagi Na Milega Dobara, who loved it and basically proclaimed it the greatest thing since Rowdy Rathore. (Ms. Zoya, if you're reading this, I know this doesn't sound like much of a compliment but believe me, coming from my friend it is). I believe this originally released around the time I and the MCF started watching Bollywood together on a sporadic basis (Parvarish, Dil Bole Hadippa, Baand Baaja Bharat), and even then I had it pegged as an MCF kind of movie; it just took me this long to snag a copy and pre-view it.

I'm not sure if that rumor is accurate - if only judging by the characters' ages, who all needed to be in their mid-30's, with a bit of baggage. This was almost 4 years ago, and Ranbir at the time was in his late 20's and looked it, so I'm not completely convinced the story is true. Zoya did want to cast Ranbir in a movie she was writing about sibling rivalry(or something... this is totally hearsay and I may not be remembering this correctly.. ) and this might have happened at the same time, hence the story about ZNMD and Ranbir.

From what I remember, originally Zoya had planned to cast Ranbir and Imran alongside Farhan. I presume she wanted Ranbir for Hrithik's role and Imran for Abhay's. Farhan's role was written with Farhan's real-life personality in mind, so that role was not offered to anyone else. Ranbir allegedly balked at the idea of playing Farhan's college buddy, since Farhan is nearly a decade older. Imran wanted out when Ranbir refused to be part of the film. It's been a long time and I don't have any sources to cite, this is all from memory. Personally, I thought Farhan had the best written role, and if Ranbir turned it down, it's probably because he didn't want to play second fiddle to anybody.

Chennai Express Despite being up for countless BW Razzies, I really enjoyed this. I loved all the self-mocking references to DDLJ and Ra-One*, and the singing conversations had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion, especially when I recognised the song. The scenery and some of the cinematography I loved, too, although I have a sneaking suspicion that PhotoShopping may have been heavily involved in some of the former. It tailed off a bit at the end, I thought, and I could've done without the prolonged fight scene and the message that kind of went with it, that the best way to prove you love someone is to beat up/get beaten up by someone else , but otherwise it was a lot of fun. Also, if that whole 'carrying your wife up the steps to the temple' is a Real Thing, I think it's very sweet and noble and all husbands should do it, whether they're Indian or not. *I'm guessing other SRK films were mentioned as well, but they're the only ones I picked up on.
