Cute, sweet Rani is playing a cop in this and undergoing intensive physical training for the role. The director, Pradeep Sarkar, made the highly regarded Parineeta with Vidya Balan, but his movies with Yash Raj Films (of which this is one) are less well-regarded.

Odadune, thank you for ***aaalll.lll*** of your work in this thread!!! Query: May a woman over 35, or even 30, still be called "cute?" Compare Katie Couric, who progressed from "perky" to "simmering." Dancelover

^ Hmm. If it is, I'm not quite sure what to expect from it, since the Wiki for Devi Chaudhurani says it was written in 1884 and is heavily pro-India/anti-British Rule. It also says there's been a previous film adaptation in 1974, starring Suchitra Sen, which unfortunately isn't a name I know. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devi_Chaudhurani

Poster and synopsis: "Deft at picking up hidden clues and fearless in confronting hardened criminals, Shivani stumbles into the world of debauchery, cruel desires and exploitation and onto a case that will change her life forever." "The film's story takes an interesting curve when a teenage girl is kidnapped by the child trafficking mafia and smuggled outside the city. Shivani then embarks on a relentless hunt for the girl and what follows is a cat and mouse game between the fearless cop and a ruthless mafia kingpin."(Yash Raj press release relayed by Pinkvilla). Gonna keep my opinion to myself for a while, I'm curious to see what the rest of you think of it.

trailer's up; warning: takes rather too much interest IMHO in the sex trafficking angle (first 33 seconds are nothing but that). Rani is excellent.

Agreed that it's timely, just I felt like the trailer skated on the brink of being prurient about it, but that might just be me being squeamish. Also agreed with you on Rani in the action scenes, but brownie points to her for stepping outside her comfort zone. I liked her attitude in the role, I thought she did the deadpan yet perpetually angry hardboiled detective thing well.

Promotional video (probably not part of film) using the national anthem.
