Just finished watching the first series of Last Tango In Halifax starring the wonderful Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, and also Sarah Lancashire, which is not quite so wonderful but probably can't be avoided.* Derek Jacobi especially is such an absolute puppy dog in this that you just want to pick him up and give him a cuddle every time he's on screen. Anyway, it's about a couple in their seventies who met up again after 60 years, when their respective grandsons put them on Facebook. Quite apart from anything else, it's just so refreshing to see an older generation of actors being given something contemporary, up-front-and-centre and intelligent to work with, rather than stereotypical doddering comic bit-parts. Some of it didn't quite gel for me(like Jacobi's screen daughter's complicated lovelife, for eg), but there were some very funny scenes, as well as some quite touching ones. Stand-out scene for me was the political discussion in the Church betwixt Jacobi and Reid, which had me laughing out loud. I think a second series screened in the UK at the end of last year, so I'm looking forward to see how it all progresses. *This is a 'familiarity breeds contempt' thing for me, rather than a personal dislike for the actress in question. Back in the 1990s, every British drama seemed to have Helen Baxendale in it, now it has Sarah Lancashire. Ditto, Xas.

ShantiSal - Hatufim sounds really interesting, I'm going to try and track it down over here. The first two series of Luther. Hmmm... I liked the first series, I thought Idris Elba was perfect for the role, and I like all the various dynamics, although I did think Paul McGann's character was a total drip! Also, as a New Zealander, it was nice to spot all the little NZ references that writer Ian Cross snuck in. The second series, though, I spent far too much time thinking 'well that's just dumb', and '...but why??'. I'll watch S3 because I sort of feel obliged now that I've watched the other two, I'm just hoping it's a biiiig improvement on S2.

Like I said at the beginning of this thread: "People here may be interested in the recurring character Alice Morgan, an amoral female genius turning the tables on the men who cross her path. Otherwise, the show was interesting, if not great." If you don't care for her character, I wouldn't rush to watch S3. If you want more British police drama, try the first four seasons of Prime Suspect.

I watched the first series of Luther when it aired and thought it was OK but could see the train wreck coming with the Aloce character. I haven't watched further series.
i'll endorse the view about Prime Suspect and also add another Lynda La Plante production - the Trial and Retribution series.

I don't mind Alice, and in a way it's sort of nice to have a female psychopath for a change*, but so much of S2 just didn't click, and there were plotholes a mile wide all over the place. It was also really weird to see Sister Evangelina** from Call The Midwife turn up as some sort of Don. On the plus side of my television series watching, S3 of Game of Thrones has arrived in my letterbox much sooner than I'd expected (thank you Fatso DVDs!), and I've already got the first two episodes out of the way. Thankfully the forecast for this weekend is supposed to be rain, so I won't feel quite so bad that not much else will be getting done for the next few days. *Yes, I know that doesn't sound right on any level. **Played by Pam Ferris, yet another New Zealander who's infiltrated the ranks.

I've been watching Supernatural for about four months. This is my first horror show and so far I've been enjoying it. Especially since season 4 introduced the angels. Do any of you watch it? And can you recommend an English language discussion board or forum? I would prefer something like bollywhat, where people actually articulate their thoughts in English and not twitter-speak or text-speak.

I don't know about their Supernatural section in particular, but the AV Club tends to have reviews with pretty good commenters, although their disqus based commenting setup is a bit dodgy, and it looks like they only cover season 5 to present: www.avclub.com/tv/supernatural/?season=5

Screening here is the second series of The Bridge (Bron/Broen) - it's great to see Martin and Saga working together again on a case.

Elementary season 2: Went downhill in a major way from season 1, with sf gadgets and spy stuff messing up the formula.
Arrow seasons 1 and 2: Watched this as people said it was great. The ongoing flashbacks were good, as was the comedy sidekick Felicity Smoak. Wasn't impressed overall.
Both series suffered from in-your-face product placement (Microsoft Windows and Surface tablets) and a need to hand hold the audience by explaining references, relationships, etc. all the time. All the explaining felt very artificial and made it hard to suspend disbelief; is it present in most other TV shows these days?
Mad Men final season part 1: I feel more and more that the series arc is told by the intro: DD's life falls apart, only to come together again by the end of the series.

Saw the first episode of Being Human (the British one) on Netflix streaming. I liked it. It's nothing terribly groundbreaking in terms of how these characters are presented (of course the vampire character is trying not to feed on human blood and finding it difficult and of course the werewolf character is the mildest sweetest guy when he's not a slobbering monster), but the acting is good and I like their interactions so far. Throwing a ghost into the mix is kind of fun, and I wonder how much she'll be able to do throughout the series, being non-corporeal and all.

I've seen the four out of the five seasons and plan on seeing the fifth season soon. So far I like it. Just because Annie is a ghost it doesn't mean that she just sits there making them tea: she's actually quite integral to a few of the storylines - especially in season four.

The More Casual Fan has gotten me addicted to Next Food Network Star, or whatever it's called. We think it's funny how the online commenters (mostly centered on the "Rebel Recap" blog at Food Network's website) mostly think Giada's been favoring Sarah and Luca this past episode when to us it looks like she's trying to be fair to two contestants she doesn't like, and Lenny's the one she's really blatantly rooting for. Glad to see Loreal go home. Annoying twit who can't cook and is totally ignorant of her alleged field of expertise (butchering).
