YRF’s next stars Shahrukh Khan in and as “FAN”16 December 2013 YRF is pleased to announce that Maneesh Sharma, who over the years has been the biggest fan of Shahrukh Khan, will now get a chance to fulfil his dream of directing the superstar in Yash Raj Films' next, "FAN". Shahrukh Khan, the man unarguably with one of the greatest fan following globally, will now play the role of being the biggest fan himself in the forthcoming movie. As Shahrukh Khan announced this morning, "Most of the characters I do are the ones I create... for the first time I am going to play what has created me... I will be in my next a "FAN"." Directed by Maneesh Sharma and produced by Aditya Chopra, the film has been written by Habib Faisal and will start shooting May 2014. Technically, he's already played an adoring fanboy type in the first half of Om Shanti Om, but I look forward to seeing him work with the Baand Baaja Bharat guy.

So, the prince and popper right? Yup, sure sounds like it. There's at least one traditional style (ie, swashbuckling period piece with child artist as lead and grownup stars in supporting roles) Prince and the Pauper adaptation from the sixties, called Raja aur Runk. I'm honestly kind of curious to see what Maneesh does with this idea. |

The casting rumour mill is getting going. Here's today's gossip from ApunKaChoice: Ileana D'Cruz, Vaani Kapoor opposite Shahrukh Khan in 'Fan'!After a lot of speculation about superstar Shahrukh Khan’s heroines in YRF’s Fan, here comes the news that Ileana D'Cruz and Vaani Kapoor have been roped in for the movie. Several names, including that of Parineeti Chopra, have popped up till now as the probable leads in the movie. A few days back, Shahrukh Khan even said in an interview that Fan doesn’t require any top actress. Though the makers are tightlipped about the casting, sources claim that Ileana D’Cruz and Vaani Kapoor have indeed landed the respective roles. Both the actresses have never shared screen space with the King Khan. Well, that’s the trend -- fresh jodis are all the rage in Bollywood. An interesting dope about the movie is that the double role Shahrukh Khan is going to essay is of a reigning superstar (himself) and his fan! Shahrukh Khan will reportedly portray the characters of a superstar and that of a common man, named Rahul. The character of Rahul is a huge fan of the Badshah Khan. As per reports, the opening shot of the movie will have the superstar celebrating his birthday outside his residence, and his lookalike fan will be seen watching him, standing in a crowd of 700 people. Sources further claim that these scenes will be filmed this year outside Mannat on SRK's birthday November 2. The release date of Fan has already been locked for Independence Day, 2015. |

OTOH, since SRK is playing "a Superstar" it would be realistic to cast 20-somethings as "actresses matched with a superstar even though they are too young for him!"

If I had to guess, I would guess that Vaani Kapoor is playing "Glamorous YRF Heroine Co-starring with Superstar SRK in a movie, who mistakes the lookalike for the real deal as required by the plot" and Ileana is playing "Girl Next Door Love Interest to SRK lookalike."

Ugh. I know it's a "thing" in Bollywood (and movies in general) to cast younger actresses with older actors, but barf. I'm fed up with that.

Latest casting news (couple weeks back) was that Ileana was an item girl, not a heroine.
Latest scheduling news is that Fan has been pushed back to fourth quarter 2015. I would guess Christmas, since there have been persistent rumors about Shahrukh releasing a film on that date and Bajirao Mastani moving to a different slot. Aditya Chopra and SRK apparently gave the Independence Weekend slot to Brothers, the Karan Johar/Karan Malhotra remake of Warrior.
