From the same article: "It was not always the case ... Sharmilla Tagore says that there were meaty roles for women in ... the 70s." D

IMO, Box Office India's "List of the Top Actresses In Popularity as of October 2016" might better go into this Thread than any other on Masala's first two pages. (I didn't bother to look at the other five pages.)
Ten Most Popular in October 2016 (with year of birth) 1 - Depika Padukone 1986 2 - Alia Bhatt 1993 3 - Shradha Kapoor 1989 4 - Katrina Kaif 1984 5 - Anushka Sharma 1988 6 - Kareena Kapoor 1980 7 - Priyanka Chopra 1982 8 - Sonakshi Sinha 1987 9 - Kangana Ranaut 1987 10 - Parineeti Chopra 1988
Note in particular their ages this year: 30, 23, 27, 32, 28, 36, 34, 29, 29, 28! Alia at 23 the youngest by 4 years; Shradha at 27 second-youngest; then two 28s, two 29s, and four 30 or over! This does not count 38 year old Vidya Balan, or the off-Maternity-Leave Aishwarya R B, 43 now, and Kajol, 41.
Among others in the Second Ten, Sonam Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez are 31, as is Radhika Apte (Parched). Tanisha Chatterjee is 36, Taapsee Pannu (Pink) 29. Yami Gautam & Swara Bhaskar are 28. There are as many others ranging from 28 to 39 (Divya Dutta), but younger than 28 besides DP & Shradha are only one (1!), 26-year-old Kriti Sanon.
What does that mean for Working Conditions of Bollywood Actresses?
