I'm glad Parineeti has signed a new film, though I do wish she'd explore directors/production houses outside YRF more often.

She's part of Yash Raj Talents so I'm not surprise about her doing a movie with YRF. She's like Alia in this regard. But it's indeed a pity that she doesn't get out and look for different things because at least Alia got to work with different kind of directors like Imtiaz Ali, Gauri Shinde, Vikas Bahl... And working solely with YRF didn't help Rani nor Anushka...

I completely understand why Parineeti would want to maintain a positive relationship with the production house that launched her. I simply wish that she would mix it up like Ranveer Singh, for example, who is also a YRF find. Since she completed her three-year contract with YRF, Parineeti has only done one film outside YRF and rejected the likes of Piku. Like you mentioned, I'm concerned that she might go the Rani or Anushka (pre- NH 10 etc) way which would be a huge waste of her talent. And, since this is already off topic, I'm finding that YRF (and Dharma) are doing a great job of launching new faces but they don't know what to do with them after that. It's no wonder that Shraddha Kapoor attained the most success after walking out of her three-film contract with YRF. Anyway, I apologize for getting off track. Here's a link to an interview with Parineeti, where she explains that she plays an aspiring singer in this film.

Here's a link to an interview with Parineeti, where she explains that she plays an aspiring singer in this film. Indeed, going the Ranveer Singh way would have been better. He's offered premium projects by YRF because he did movies like Lootera, RL, DDD and BM which were successes that enabled him to compete with the likes of Ranbir and Varun. Sushant Singh Rajput seems to have been fed up too because he left YRTalents as he felt he didn't get the work he deserved. He must be miffed about Paani... He did say that he missed out on 12 movies while awaiting the shoot of one he was supposed to do. Moreover, leaving YRT did good to Shraddha like you pointed out so things might start to look up from here. I think Ranveer had it worse than him when it comes to the movies YRF gave him though. Ranveer had weak movies like Ladies vs RB, Kill Dill and Gunday while Sushant had movies like Shuddh Desi Romance and the ambitious Detective Byomkesh Bakshi... I feel Dharma manages it's kids career better. Varun doesn't count because his career is pretty much managed by his father. But Alia and Sidarth have big successes under their belt and were able to experiment "outside" the banner with a little push from Karan. Thanks for sharing this link. Parineeti will, at least, have something to sink her teeth into with singing and sharing the screen with Ayushmann Khurrana means she'll have lots of screen time. It's better than a Dhoom in my books even though the movie will be less successful. Parineeti turned down Piku because she was supposed to star in a movie with Saif. Saif pulled out of the film which didn't materialise. It may also be that she doesn't want to work with a production house with no prestige... But it must burn knowing that Deepika garnered a lot of recognition for this role.

But Alia and Sidarth have big successes under their belt and were able to experiment "outside" the banner with a little push from Karan. Although Dharma allow their stars to experiment and work with other filmmakers, I find that they are generally horrible at exploiting the talent of their stars in their own productions. See Alia's career as an example. Absent Highway, she's done four samey rom-coms with Dharma where she wasn't given much opportunity to perform. Frankly, if she hadn't done Highway, people would have written her off. I just really hope Alia doesn't follow in Kareena's footsteps and become another talented actress who is reluctant to experiment and only signs the films that KJo tells her to sign. At least, she has Udta Punjab coming out this year. On a similar note, Dharma has been giving Sidharth some pretty mediocre films like Brothers. I agree with you on Varun, though; he's on a different level. Parineeti turned down Piku because she was supposed to star in a movie with Saif. Saif pulled out of the film which didn't materialise. It may also be that she doesn't want to work with a production house with no prestige... But it must burn knowing that Deepika garnered a lot of recognition for this role. I hope you're right re: Parineeti's reason for turning down Piku being a film with Saif. I read that she chose to do Daawat-e-Ishq instead, and was reluctant to work in the film because of the smaller banner. Thanks for the great discussion. To get back to the film at hand, I wonder if YRF is going to try to recreate the success of Dum Laga Ke Haisha with the 90s cassette type angle. Of course, it's too early to tell but I'm looking forward to Parineeti singing in the film - she's got a great voice.

In regard of Karan Johar, it's him really who got Alia on board of all of her "different" projects. He associated himself with Phantom to produce some projects for example like Shaandaar. I think he's using Dharma more for popular movies. Per the rumeur, he also got got Arjun replaced by Sidarth in Ek Villain but made up for it by giving him 2 States. Both went on to become 100cr movies and Sidarth got to play something different. In regard of Brothers, it being a remake was supposed to make it a safe bet. Sidarth played the role of Tom Hardy who had the most interesting role of the two brothers in the american version. Also, I think Sidarth was supposed to ride on Akshay's popularity to get himself a hit. They were let down by the script and a too big budget. You're welcome I like talking about movies and the behind the scene drama involved. Indeed, YRF seems to be heading for smaller budget (even Aditya's Befikre will be made on a smaller scale than what the director is used to) it should help the movies being hits more easily. Regarding Meri Pyaari Bindu, that may be what they'll be going for. It would be nice if they managed to instill a nostalgic feel in it. It would really make the movie work because so much has changed since the 90's...

I agree that films like Brothers or Shaandaar seem like safe, economic bets -- on paper, at least. I was speaking from a performance/script perspective, and don't believe that Dharma gives its stars the opportunities to sink their teeth into good roles in Dharma's own films. Very few people would have believed that Alia could pull off her role in Highway, after having only watched Student of the Year, for example. Not saying that Dharma need to tackle heavy and intense subjects in their films or venture into artier cinema, I just wish they'd step up their game a bit given that they're working with some really good raw talent.

It would Indeed be nice if Karan did more movies like Kaal or Kurbaan. It's not that Kurbaan was perfect but it had its own different feel, especially the part taking place in the US. Or that they make more movies like the Lunchbox.
Shakun Batra's work, Gauri Shinde's next are good attempt at diversifying but they still revolve around the theme of romance (which is an interesting one that can be explored in different ways) which ends up branding Dharma's movie as good romcoms.
They should begin diversifying and take advantage of their position to offer to A-list actors or acclaimed one good roles. Because like you pointed out, Working soleil with Dharma or YRF is of no help for actors who tend to be typecasted and not have something different to do in their films. Parineeti became the strong, loud girl next door. Anushka Sharma the bubbly confident girl. Alia the cute girl. Sidarth the broody guy.
