My opinion, today, is that Bajirao's and Mastani's Real Problem in this film, was that neither Ranveer nor Dehpika can match Priyanka as an actor. When SLB extracted her best performance, she was going to take the film for her character, no matter which character she played! He'd have had to tone her down to prevent that. Tomorrow I might have a different opinion. Dancelover, also feeling it about time that PC was matched with Aamir Khan, or Irrfan, or N. Siddique. She was amazing, but I think Deepika was amazing also. She just had a very different type of character, less open and arguably less sympathetic. I think all three leads gave their most brilliant performances to date.

(the underdog in that relationship) She had a sunny disposition, but was highly moral and strong in her convictions. We had the advantage of seeing her lighter (playful) side which wasn't the case with Mastani who was (as some have suggested) 'blinkered' and rather grim. Kashi was shown in a physical sex scene while Mastani was all songs, eyes and grandiose dialogues (which subtitle dependent folk miss).

Can we talk about SLB's incredible soundtrack to this film? Stunning work all around. I can't nail down a favorite song.

Once the dagger became hers she was committed and he knew it too. When Kashi noticed the dagger was missing, Bajirao was very cagey (especially after she had said how wonderful it was for her - being his one love). I have a clear memory of Bajirao saying something like, "It would have been nice to know that's what I was doing" to Mastani regarding the dagger meaning they were married. And right after that is the "Kabool, kabool, kabool" scene, which I think marks the point at which he believed they were married, although Mastani had believed it from the gifting of the dagger. Any man would be cagey to his wife about giving a gift to another (beautiful) woman. He didn't have to think it was a marriage vow to think Kashi wouldn't be thrilled by it. It was more than a gift and he knew it by the time he returned - it was a 'wedding ring.' Why would Kabool (being a Muslim acceptance) resonate more with him than the custom of giving a dagger? If as you say, he didn't know what the dagger meant then maybe the Kabool scene - irrespective of religion, is the acknowledgement of her commitment and understanding of the circumstances she would face. (is it the scene where she goes to him at night to give him paan - and probably much more that SLB doesn't want us to see.)

What I like about it is that every song has a purpose for it's placement IMO - related to and justified by the narrative. Even though some argue that Pinga and Malhari aren't suitable, these are my favs and obviously the biggest crowd-pleasers. SLB knew what he was doing.

The Maharatas ruled over Moslems as well as Hindus (hopefully as well!). Therefore the Peshwa needed to know Moslem customs, including wedding customs. The dagger seems to have been a local (tribal?) thing. Mastani might have guessed that he wouldn't know what it meant to her. Dancelover I have a clear memory of Bajirao saying something like, "It would have been nice to know that's what I was doing" to Mastani regarding the dagger meaning they were married. Box Office India's final report: Bajirao Mastani will earn about 183 crore in India; 9th highest ever. Its "share" (profit) will be 85 crore; 12th highest ever. It has done more business than Yeh Javaani Hai Devaani, Happy New Year, and Krish Three, but its profit is lower (due to higher expenses). Those sets! Three superstar actors!
