Going to try to squeeze this in sometime tomorrow, since it's been a few months since I've seen a Hindi film. Having withdrawals.

Some reviews: Pinkvilla review - They give it a 60% out of 100 Koimoi review - They give it a 3 out of 5 stars. These are their overall thoughts about the film: "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is not everyone’s cup of tea! It is a family watch and best for those who love to watch happy endings with emotional undertones. This is a typical Rajshri affair so watch it only if you can digest it. I am going with a 3/5 for the film." Times of India review - A 3.5 out of 5 stars The Indian Express review - 1.5 out of 5 stars (This one contains spoilers) NDTV Movies review - 2 out of 5 stars. Their overall thoughts about the film: "The overwrought PRDP might not be that bad, but it is syrupy to the point of being unendurable. Only for Salman Khan fans." Hindustan Times review - 2 out of 5 stars. IBN Live review - 3 out of 5 stars. Their overall thoughts about the film: "Alas, the predictable plotting and the lazy characterization never really allow you to be invested in any of the film's characters or to even care for them. Make no mistake, Salman Khan is the sole draw of this film, and he works hard for his top billing. The actor is in good form - terrific in the comic scenes, and earnest in the emotional ones - turning on the charm to help you survive, and even enjoy, this nearly 3 hour film that's crammed with songs, and over-styled to a fault. I'm going with two-and-a-half stars plus an additional half star for Salman Khan, which makes it three out of five for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Get ready for a sugar rush." IBTimes India review - 3 out of 5 stars. Their overall thoughts about the film: "In a nutshell, "PRDP" looks like a good news on an agenda-less Sunday afternoon in front of the television set. For those who do not agree, watch it because Salman is your favourite hero. Would've settled for 2.5, but the three is because it's Prem and he is back."

I saw it last night with my neighbor Nish! PRDP is playing in more theaters in Chicagoland than any Bollywood film ever has, according to Kathy of AccessBollywood. The BEST thing about the money I spent on my ticket is that the theater showed both the Dilwale and Tamasha trailers WITH SUBTITLES! I was in heaven from the first moments! But the movie was pretty darn good, too. I actually loved that I didn't know what was going on from the trailer until I saw it so I won't spoiler it at all. I compare it to a Kevin Kline movie from years ago, and you'll see what I mean after you see it. Nish had no clue what I was talking about because that was before she came to America. I'd give it three and a half or four stars out of five. Salman is in full on sweetness mode -- and that's how I like him. But not as dumb and stubborn as a rock like in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. There are SO many visual allusions to Mughal-e-Azam. Not necessarily plot allusions, but besides the ostrich feather song, there is a hall of mirrors that has a prominent role in the story. The theater we saw it in doesn't usually show Hindi films (they have Telugu and Tamil), so it wasn't a full theater. I'm thinking most people will go this weekend, too, rather than a Thursday night. I thought Sonam was very good, and their chemistry was good, but not sizzling. I mean Shahrukh Khan can turn on that Defcon III heat after he's been cute with a co-star, and I didn't get that vibe here. But that's okay. Really Sonam was trying to seduce him, and he was resisting for *reasons* and that's fun to watch as well. This is a movie I wouldn't mind watching again. Once you know the reason for the mustache and no mustache it would be fun to watch from the beginning to see the differences in the way he carries himself. The plot has some meat to it with family drama, and is not as lighter than air like Shaandaar was. It loses the momentum a bit in the middle section of the film, but it has an dramatic ending section. How's that for a review that doesn't reveal anything at all??

Here is The Vigil Idiots 'review' - sums it up but we (my MCF friend and I) enjoyed it. Nice songs, gorgeous costumes - who cares about the lack of logic in the plot

Vigil Idiot has it right, but this is an old school film, and it doesn't matter. It relies largely on Salman Khan to carry you over the gaping plot holes, and he does it with considerable style, making sure that the three hour running time does not drag until the very end. It's beautiful to look at, using Rajasthan palaces, ravishing costumes, and colourful song picturisations to stunning effect, backed by the underrated Himmesh Reshammiya's many (but not too many in my opinion) catchy songs. Sonam Kapoor wears the costumes well, and her acting talents are not stretched, so she makes a great princess.
PRDP is a good timepass film: lovely to look at, hummable music, lots of tugging on heartstrings, just barely enough plot to tie it together, cardboard villains who are defeated at the end, families sundered, and families reunitied. It's well short of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and you would not want a lot of PRDPs each year, but it's good to see one now and again.

I agree with the Bollyfools guys! They enjoyed it, and don't spoiler the plot in this review. As to theboldandthebolly 's question. I didn't get the impression things had gone that far either. But certainly not as chaste as Prem wanted to be.

On theboldandthebolly's question: I thought the prince had unsuccessfully suggested they sleep together before marriage, which was one of the reasons Maithili was upset with him. But after she fell in love with Prem, she was doing the suggesting, and not of the hugging or kissing variety.

Box Office India says Thursday 39 crore (Dilwali) Best First Day Friday only 29.25 crore Saturday 28.25 so it's a HIT, but Sunday 25.75 with these drops, Monday 10.75 it won't be a Blockbuster.
Prediction for (8-day) week is 155 crore, which Kick did in seven days. Next week will show if it reaches 200 crore.
This means that 2015 will earn hardly more money than 2014 or 2013, maybe even less.

We saw it Sunday and enjoyed it. Not earth shattering or classic but was fun and reminded me why I got so into Bollywood in the first place. Glaring omission. Salman did not take his shirt off.

*SPOILERS*
The movie was dragging a little but it was to be expected as it's a Sooraj Barjatya's.
I understand that the director is into values and family relations but on this one he should have added more drama between Maithili and Prem and have a tighter script.
It would have been better if Prem was Vijay, that amnesia was involved and that the action spanned on some months because the ending was a little meh and everything was happening too fast.
Salman was good as Prem/Vijay as was Sonam's as the demure Maithili (though her character could have had more scope).

Finished this last night--it took me three days to watch it, and I took a break on Saturday and watched Knock Out for something completely different.
It was generally pleasant, but I'm just not interested in either Salman or Sonam and I couldn't get into it for that reason. Salman/Sonam seemed more like a father-daughter duo than engaged people to me. I did enjoy the dancing and the songs--all (what seemed like) 142 of them. I guessed precisely what was going to happen in the climactic scene about an hour before the end. (Can't such a rich family see about getting that roof fixed?). But, yeah, plot holes are part of the territory.
