So I got to thinking after moviemavengal posted this video earlier (and had to take a breather...I'll take one rain-drenched Prabhas for my house, please and thanks)...I really do enjoy a good Indian rain song! Whether sexy, playful, morose, or anything inbetween, rain is just a good aesthetic for a song. So what are your favorite Indian rain songs? I'll post some of mine below. "Dekho Na" from Fanaa - This film has some of my favorite visuals of all time - I'm left breathless every time I watch "Mere Haath Mein" - and this song is no exception. From the slow-mo raindrops to the sizzling chemistry between Aamir and Kajol...whew. "Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua" from Shree 420 - This is a song I saw before I saw the movie, and I fell in love with it instantly. How could you not?! Iconic. "Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka" from Devdas - I'm just a sucker for Bhansali visuals. Bonus points for Paro's magic lamp that refuses to extinguish even during a downpour, and Aishwarya looking more ethereally beautiful than ever. "Koi Ladki Hai" from Dil To Pagal Hai - This film's music has given me many earworms, but this one might be the one that has wriggled in deepest. I find myself humming this melody a lot. And it's a cute picturization, besides SRK's penchant for see-through shirts...lol. "Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aaye" from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - This song might be my favorite part of K2H2. The raw emotion, the picturization...man, I just love it. My heart absolutely breaks for Kajol's character here. "Nahi Samne Ye Alag Baat Hai" from Taal - You know how I said I'd like a rain-drenched Prabhas to myself? I'd like a rain-drenched Akshaye Khanna, too, please.

emily - Great topic and you picked some of my favorites, like Dekho Na. -- As did ShantiSal from Guru! I wish I could remember where I read this, maybe in Bollywood: A Guidebook to Popular Hindi Cinema by Tejaswini Gan. We all intuitively know this from all the movies we've seen, but the meaning of rain in Indian movies is very different to what it mainly is in Hollywood films. Singin' In the Rain is the anomaly, mostly rain in Hollywood films means sadness and depression, and it invokes coldness. In contrast, rain in Indian films is an allegory for passion -- even sexual release. It comes from the feeling of anticipation in the air waiting for the monsoon rains to begin -- and the feeling of relief when they do. Those of us in the Midwest can understand somewhat, with our summer thunderstorms. Getting past the censors with form fitting wet saris is most of the point, too. My all time favorite is Main Yahaan Hoon from Veer-Zaara, the tension builds and builds for Zaara and culminates in SRK embracing her in the rain: Paheli has a similar sense of anticipation building up to the embrace when the storm breaks: You included one from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but not the ultimate!

Taal Se Taal Mila - Taal
Aaj Rapat Jaye To Hame Na - Namak Halaal
I love this one mostly because of Smita Patil. She was so lovely, and it's heartbreaking what happened to her.

Dekho Zara Dekha (Barkha Ki Jhadee) from Yeh Dillagi 1994. Lata Mangeshkar, Kumar Sanu. Starts with a solo by Akshay Kumar. He could moovve in those days! After a full minute, Kajol comes out, discards her umbrella, walks up to him, they stare into each others eyes for another minute, and *kiss on the lips!* Then the backup dancers show up, the dance resumes, and Kajol matches Akshay step for step.

I like the Devdas one which has already been mentioned. Other than that my favourites are these two.
