I really hate the way public interest litigations (PILs) in India are used to badger artists and censor them. I hope the high court sees reason and overturns the ban. Considering how expensive Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films are, he must be furious to be losing out on revenue from such a huge Hindi speaking state. HC bans Hindi film 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' in UP The Allahabad High Court today banned director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romantic saga " Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela" in Uttar Pradesh. The Lucknow bench of the court comprising justices Devi Prasad Singh and Ashok Pal Singh passed the order to ban the film on a petition filed by Maryada Purshottam Bhagwan Ramleela Samiti, Bahraich. The petitioner had prayed for cancellation of Censor Board certification given to the film on November 1 and sought that controversial and objectionable dialogues be removed from the film. The film starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh was released on November 15. The petition had contended that the film was hurting religious sentiments of Hindus and its title 'Ramleela' was giving a wrong message to society as Lord Ram's 'leela' (act) had great impact on Indian society. Besides, Centre, state government, Central Film Certification Board, UP's Chief Secretary, Eros International and Bhansali had been made a party in the petition.

ISeemToRecall that such petitions were filed in at least two other jurisdictions, and rejected. There seems to be a Movement, perhaps even organized, to file in as many jurisdictions as they can, to stop various movies, that someone takes offense at. Everyone is offended by something! People need to understand that offenses happen, insults happen, bad things happen, and lawsuits won't stop it, force makes it worse! People must learn to tolerate these things, as long as no physical damage is done. Preventing or punishing physical damage is difficult enough, and timeconsuming too. One way to prevent physical damage, is to allow the offender to talk instead of do. This is *so* effective, it even works for chimpanzees! ISeemToRecall that such petitions were filed in at least two other jurisdictions, and rejected. There seems to be a Movement, perhaps even organized, to file in as many jurisdictions as they can, to stop various movies, that someone takes offense at. I think you're right, Dancelover. It's probably some group who's decided to harass SLB. At any rate, it seems the film will be released in UP minus its title, which is still better than it being banned altogether: 'Ram Leela' to be screened in UP without title'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' might be screened again in UP, after the distributor changed its title sheet. The film was pulled off screens in Noida and Ghaziabad recently after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court banned the screening of the film in UP, until the words 'Ram-Leela' and 'Rasleela' were removed from the title. In its ruling, the bench said, "We are only concerned with the use of word 'Ram-Leela' in the title of the film which hurts the sentiments of billions of peoples not only in India but all over the world." Exhibitors in Noida and Ghaziabad say the production house, Eros, has provided the new title sheet to be displayed in UP. A spokesperson for SRS Cinemas said on Saturday, "We're screening the movie from today in all our halls in UP. We got the changed title sheet." Yogesh Raizada, corporate head, Wave Cinemas, also told us on Saturday, "There is a 99% chance that we start the screening of this film today. We've received the revised title sheet, but it is a catch-22 situation for us. Nobody knows who is going to lead, but sooner or later, everyone will screen it." The title of the movie has not been changed, it appears - it's simply been removed from the title sheet. Now, the movie will not start with the name 'Goliyan Ki Rasleela - Ram-Leela'. Instead, it will begin straight with the names of the actors, said the spokesperson from SRS Cinemas. The Eros spokesperson only said, "The film is not banned in UP as alleged by some sections of the print and electronic media. We confirm that the film is playing in cinemas in UP."
