Thread for reviews and discussion of Bombay Velvet. Raja Sen on Rediff says Bombay Velvet is an epic misfire, while Sukanya Verma on the same site is also unenthusiastic: Bombay Velvet is too bloodless to stun, too passionless to stir. I found it beautiful to look at, but unengaging. So much effort seems to have gone into creating a period feel that they forgot to tell a good story, and ended up with a soulless film whose characters are hard to care about. That's in spite of the acting being generally good, and Karan Johar improving on his last performance. It's an OK watch, with good music but, if you're going to make the effort to see just one film now, it should definitely be Piku rather than Bombay Velvet.

Took a small trip to see this in a theater on the other side of the city. It was a little adventure, as I've never been to this particular cinema before. Bought a ticket, walked in during previews, and discovered I was the only person in there. It stayed that way.
For starters, I'll list off the cons and move to pros, so we can end on a good note.
Cons: Slow. So slow. There's a certain point in overly-long movies where you look down at your watch and check the time; this watch-checking point came woefully early in BV. Well before the interval. It suffers from a meandering plot, a script that is a little confusing, and characters extremely difficult to root for. The only ones worth rooting for are Chimman and, to an extent, Rosie. Acting-wise, there's no weak link...I felt like the cast all delivered decent performances. It just felt slow and lifeless at times, only picking up in the last ten or fifteen minutes.
Pros: SOUNDTRACK. That soundtrack. Soooo good, and Neeti Mohan absolutely KILLED it. I will be buying this soundtrack. Raveena Tandon sizzled in her brief cameo appearance. It was gorgeously filmed...as MrB said above, "I found it beautiful to look at, but unengaging." I certainly agree. The outfits, scenery, etc. are beautiful. Karan Johar surpassed my (admittedly low) expectations of him. Anushka was okay, but not at her best. Kay Kay Menon was sadly underused as a police detective. Satyadeep Misra's Chimman was my second favorite; he definitely needs to act in more high-profile stuff as he was brilliant. And Ranbir turned in an excellent performance. He played the fiery, temperamental Johnny Balraj to perfection. I was very proud to see him do so well, as I am lukewarm on him for the most part.
So IF you get a chance to see either Piku OR Bombay Velvet, see Piku. If you can see BOTH, go see Bombay Velvet. It's not terrible, it's pretty to look at, but it drags.
