After 20 years, DDLJ will no longer be on the big screen. From ApunKaChoice: Finally, 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' to be taken off Maratha Mandir today after 1009 weeksAfter smashing all records for the longest run at the box office, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s cult classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge will be taken off from Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir on Friday. Today is reportedly the last day of 'DDLJ' on Maratha Mandir. The film has been running at the theatre for a good 1009 weeks (that’s just a little under 20 years). For that long, fans have been flocking to see the Aditya Chopra-directed movie on the big screen. But now, sources tell us that the film will be taken off this weekend. A few weeks back, both Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol had celebrated the completion of the 1000 weeks of the uninterrupted run of ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. The first news of 'DDLJ' being taken off from Maratha Mandir came in October last year, but was denied by the theatre owner and YRF. Apparently, the aim was to let the film complete 1000 weeks at the box office. But like all good things come to an end sooner or later, the run of DDLJ too ends today. It’s sad to say it goodbye.

I wonder if it's because the film doesn't draw the same crowds as before? That would be the natural assumption, but no comment is made as to the cause for the decision here.

I can't speak for Indian theaters, but I used to work at a US cinema and the "life" of a film there was mostly determined by the crowds they brought in. Films like Frozen were there for a couple months, while less popular films left after two or three weeks. So yeah, I think you're probably right about the crowds. Really sad. I had this dream of going to see DDLJ on the big screen when I got around to visiting India one day; alas...

It looks from this article as if a change in the timing of the screenings caused attendance to drop. But presumably attendance had been going down anyway, if they decided to change the time. Maratha Mandir brings down curtains on DDLJ after 1000-week run... A Yash Raj Films production, starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, it was released on October 19, 1995. On December 12, 2014, the film had completed 1,000 weeks of continuous screening at Maratha Mandir. According to YRF, the theatre owner had recently requested that the film be screened earlier at 9.15am instead of the usual 11.30am, as it wanted to accommodate other new releases. However, the advancing of the timings saw a sharp decline in the number of customers and the theatre also had problems relating to the long working hours for its staff. Finally, it was decided to pull out the film from the theatre on Thursday after just around 200 customers sat through the film. DDLJ, however, is extremely popular on television and many channels frequently screen it. Located near Bombay Central terminus and the Maharashtra state road transport corporation’s main bus depot, the theatre used to attract hundreds of patrons including visitors to Mumbai. An added advantage was the pricing, with tickets being sold for less than Rs20. Maratha Mandir is one of Mumbai’s oldest theatres. ...

I guess we can look forward to the remake with SRK and Amy Jackson.
If the film was remade, I wonder how it would be updated...

Emily's chance to see DDLJ on the big screen may still come - the film has a reprieve. From the Yash Raj website: Overwhelming outcry brings DDLJ back to Maratha Mandir! The sudden announcement of DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE being pulled out from Maratha Mandir at the end of 1009 unprecedented weeks, resulted in a spontaneous and an overwhelming outcry from the cinema going audience, as well as dedicated fans of the movie, expressing their shock and disappointment. Ever since this news went out, the Maratha Mandir management was flooded with requests to reinstate the movie based on which they decided to immediately reconsider their decision. Given this, it has been mutually decided to continue the screening in the same 11:30 AM morning show - without breaking the uninterrupted run of the movie! This only strengthens the unconditional love of all DDLJ fans over generations. We are very happy to announce that Raj & Simran will continue to draw audiences and reinforce the timeless romance the movie has embodied over the last two decades. What better way to celebrate this announcement than revisiting DDLJ at the Maratha Mandir with your loved ones and, as the tag line says, “Come fall in love…” again & again! We would like to say a Thank You to Maratha Mandir for listening to our fans.

This is some good news. And Corbie, in this BBC article where they explore why the movie has remained so popular, they mention the theatre seats 1,105 people! Yowza! Hopefully crowds start to show up again or else they may be forced to reverse this last minute reprieve.

What a relief! May it play for 20 more years, so that I may actually have a chance of making it to India to see it there!

Perhaps DDLJ @ Maratha Mandir @ 11:30 AM could be granted some kind of "historical monument" status, so that the theater would not have to pay taxes on it.
