Baradwaj Rangan's review...Farah’s real talent lies in the mad bits she cooks up – like the spitting-teacher routine in Main Hoon Na. In an early song here, Mohini is so hot that things literally catch fire. Charlie’s team members are given little quirks that, sometimes, have amusing payoffs. I loved the idea of Boman Irani’s safecracker having a Mary Poppins-style bag, from which he pulls out the most amazing things, including a whole pineapple cake. And the scene where Nandu (Abhishek Bachchan) uses rather unconventional methods to prop himself up is a scream. I wouldn’t mind watching a Farah Khan movie that was just a random collection of these skit-like stretches – like a longish Saturday Night Live episode with really big stars.
But, alas, Farah wants to tell a story – and a sustained narrative is most certainly not her strong point. The sentimental portions (Anupam Kher makes an “emotional appearance”) and the inordinate length (nearly three hours) make this comedy/heist movie less comedic and nail-biting than it should have been, but Farah probably thinks that, with an often-shirtless Shah Rukh as the draw, nothing else is needed.

My review:
Just got back! What a ride. Don't go in taking yourself too seriously - let yourself give into the silliness that is a Farah Khan movie.
The first half dragged; the second half flew. The first 30 mins or so, especially, were almost awkwardly long. Lots of gratuitous SRK ab shots. Lots of drawn-out fight scenes. But once it got over that hump, it was awesome. It had great energy, especially songs like India Waale (which comes out SO good on a big screen) and Satakli. The humor kicked the melodrama's butt - the dramatic scenes came off corny, though the heist was pretty well orchestrated, but the comedy had the whole theater roaring.
SRK is SRK (but I love him anyway!). Deepika is Deepika (but I love her anyway!) Abhi and Boman just ace the comedy, per usual. They were my highlights of the film, personally.
Overall this was just about what I expected from the film - made me smile, laugh a lot, wanna dance. The audience - mostly Indian, though a few non-Indians in there like myself - left happy.

Thank you! Good review that explains the movie well, and there's nothing more awesome than getting out to the theater to see a good-to-great Bollywood movie starring your favorite people.

The humor kicked the melodrama's butt - the dramatic scenes came off corny, though the heist was pretty well orchestrated, but the comedy had the whole theater roaring. I really like melodrama and don't like to see it drastically pared back in masala films. For this reason Main Hoon Na, to my way of thinking, is a better film. Maybe the reason that SRKs dramatic lines looked so corny was because there hadn't been any real attempt to create a backstory. Just a quick thing between Anupam Kher and Jackie. The heist in HNY was boring - not even a modicum of surprise there. Also, no sense that the dance competition - mattered. No team building as in School of Rock or Sister Act so, consequently, no 'feel good' during the Ra! RA! patriotic ending. In Melbourne - where I saw this, the audience laughed in some parts but not a great deal. I was entertained but no great joy - Probably won't watch it again . SCORE! The manager at the theater gave me the giant cardboard stand for the movie! We folded it up and got it into the car and now Shah Rukh Khan is standing against the wall of my garage to greet me coming home every day! A great addition to my wonderful memories of going to Chicago to see Slam.
I didn't think it was as good as Farah's other two films, but was still fun.

I took a fleeting selfie with the poster out in the lobby during intermission

Is it true there's a song/scene in this movie that has many cameos from different Bollywood stars? I remember reading an article from Pinkvilla earlier this year that there was going to be a song similar to Deewangi Deewangi from Om Shanti Om in this movie, in terms star cameos. I really hope it didn't turn out to be false, that was one of the things that made me anticipate this movie!

Some of Farah's friends have brief cameos in the first half, but there's no song featuring them.

What a let down - and a tediously long one as well. I absolutely loved MHN and OSO and have watched both several times over. So HNY came as a huge disappointment. Nothing worked for me - the jokes fell flat (OK, a few were giggle worthy), the fight scenes were way too long and even the songs with their candy colour palette jarred. Overall, Farah's craft came across as clunky and terribly lazy. It angers me that she (perhaps) thought all it takes to sucker SRK fans is to put him at the centre of a paper-thin plot, add big doses of razzmatazz, cream the market with 6000 screens and bingo..she's laughing all the way to the bank. Why Shah Rukh fell for this crap is beyond me but it's saddening. But I hope, now that she's no doubt financially in the pink of health again after the losses of Tees Maar khan and Joker, she doesn't do any more movies with him (wishful thinking, I know; she may even starve him into a 10-pack next time ) Deepika was a silver lining in all the mayhem.

I ended up seeing this twice. The first time was fine and entertaining but with the requisite checking of logic at the door, no more like leave it out in the trunk of your car, because the plot holes and wtf nonsense is hardcore non-stop. I was a bit fidgety during the broad humor bits (although the little kids in the theater seemed to enjoy the silliness of dancing instructor montage) and the fight scenes esp. the long one with the "North" Korean team captain. Second time was with a friend and it didn't bear up to a second viewing honestly. And so... loud. I mean, the yelling coming out of Boman and Abhishek really grated. SRK looked great, esp. in the opening - that stuff is fun and I always fall for the Farah Khan credits and there was a special treat in there for fans of SRK's personal life. And she always makes Parsi Mumbai seem such a cute, charming and cozy place to live. Deepika was the best part, honestly. And I must note that the Bedazzler & sequins budget for this movie must have been astronomical.

BoxOfficeIndia is now predicting 170-180 crore revenues in India. It is doing *great* overseas!
