This story appeared in Hindi BBC to mark the release of Naseeruddin Shah's autobiography, but doesn't seem to exist in an English translation. I thought I'd translate it in case it interests anyone, so the usual caveat applies that any errors are mine. Do note that although the article is in Hindi, the autobiography is available in English.
Who is Naseeruddin Shah's first child?
You must have seen actor Naseeruddin Shah's two sons Imad and Vivan Shah in photos somewhere before, but did you know that his first child was a girl?
His daughter's name is Heeba, whom Naseer hasn't recognised as his own for years. Why was that, and who was the lady Naseer shared his first marriage with?
These types of issues, about which nobody knows anything aside from Naseer, are now public.
In his autobiography, "And Then One Day: A Memoir", he opened up about those aspects of his life, which were rarely spoken of before.
It's necessary that I accept her
It's understandable that it would not have been easy to put into words the story of his love with the Pakistan resident Parveen, who is older than Naseer, and the story of Heeba's birth.
This book takes you from Meerut, to the Catholic schools in Nainital and Ajmer, right up to the glitter of stardom.
It takes you through Aligarh university, the National School of Drama, and the Film and Television Institute, where Naseeruddin Shah's fate took a turn.
Space has been given to writing in a dignified way about his mother's love, the worry of a stressful relationship with his father, his first love and his first child.
At one point he writes, "I don't know how I'll be perceived, if I say that for a long time I didn't feel anything for my daughter Heeba, but now I have to accept it. She was nowhere for me, as if she didn't exist".
Some Faces
In addition to interesting gossip about familial characters, one also finds mention of directors and actors with whom Naseer worked, such as Ibrahim Alqazi, Girish Karnad, Shyam Benegal, Shabana Azmi, and especially Ompuri, with whom he continues to share an important friendship.
After rebelling against his father's wishes by becoming an actor, what happened when Naseer tried to settle in Mumbai?
Naseer writes, "Little-by-little, my father's dreams for me were ruined. I began trust in the dreams I had for myself".
At a hundred thousand words and 315 pages, this autobiography is an account of acting methods, times of success and failure, right up to his marriage to Ratna Paathak Shaah and life thereafter.
In a recent interview, Naseeruddin Shah said, "As much as possible, I've tried to be honest".
Whether or not this book will be described as a classic of the genre, it will be spoken of.
