This has been rumored for a little while, but seems to be official now: Dharma is doing a official remake of the 2011 mixed-martial arts drama Warrior, co-produced by Dharma and Lionsgate/Endemol India. The story involves an angry young man and ex-soldier (Tom Hardy/Sidharth) entering a tournament in order to win money to support the widow of a friend, only to discover that his estranged elder brother (Joel Edgerton/possibly Akshay) is also competing, in order to save his mortgaged house and provide for his family. There is also drama about their formerly abusive dad trying to turn his life around and reconcile with them, there is also flashback drama about their dying mom-really, my main reaction to reading the plot synopsis on wikipedia was that Warrior already sounded pretty much like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with more beating people up involved.
There's some confusion about who's directing this: Karan Malhotra, responsible for the new Agneepath, or Punit Malhotra, of I Hate Luv Stories and Gori Teri Pyaar Mein. Both are offbeat choices, IMO, although it's not like Dharma has anyone better at this stuff. KaranM has a lot of visual flair and technical craftsmanship, but it was on his watch that Hrithik injured his back, which makes him a dubious choice for a movie with a bunch of fight scenes, and Agneepath was pretty weak when it came to showing emotional connections between adults. Punit is a maker of glossy, mildly satirical romcoms-I actually liked GPTM moderately well and tolerated IHLS, but there's nothing about either film that screams "let's put this guy in charge of a technically challenging ensemble movie about men beating each other up to reforge their family ties!"
Inital rumors were that Akshay was locked for the role of the elder brother in this film, but Sidharth has more recently said it is not a done deal. Akshay hasn't done a 2-hero drama (as opposed to an ensemble film or two-hero comedy) in nearly ten years, unless you count Boss (which did not give the other male lead a lot of screen time) or Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara, where technically he was the villain and Imran Khan was the hero. Akki and Sid seem to get along fairly well, from what little I've seen of them interacting; they both have a reputation for being rather steady, sober personalities by industry standards and as a couple of Delhi-born models-turned-actors with no blood relations in the film business, they perhaps find each other more comprehensible than all the star kids.
We don't have a firm filming timeframe, although I would guess either somewhere in 3rd quarter of 2014, based on what else is rumored about Akshay's schedule (alot for 4th quarter 2014, not so much between now and then) or sometime in 2015.
