Takkari Donga (Telugu, *ing Mahesh Babu, Bipasha Basu, Lisa Ray)
« on: October 29, 2008, 04:13:07 AM »
Here's my short review of Takkari Donga, if there are any Bollywhatters out there who ever contemplate buying it. I certainly had no knowledge of what it would contain when I bought it in a fit of "Need to see Mahesh Babu! Now!", so if this can help anyone else in a similar situation, so much the better.
The premise of Takkari Donga is pretty unusual for an Indian film: it's basically a spaghetti western, based in (more or less) the American Wild West of the 19th century, except that this Wild West is populated with Telugu-speaking Indians, cobras, and an anachronistic female character in a black PVC catsuit.
This makes it ridiculous, but fun. Less fun, however, is the objectification of the two female actresses. The film doesn't bother to flesh out their personalities or their character arcs, but just throws contrived situations so that we can gawp at their bodies (eg. Mahesh Babu interrogates Bipasha in a bathtub, and pulls the bathplug to make her spill the beans faster; Lisa gets bitten by a snake on her naked waist, and so Mahesh has to suck the venom out...). It was pretty gross.
The scenes linking these titillation scenes were mostly taken straight from the Sergio Leone films. So nothing worth seeing there either; you've seen it all before, done better. The songs were unmemorable, either in melody or picturization.
A plus point was the beautiful scenery: much of the film was shot in Monument Valley, which is a spectacle unto itself. And, the highlight for me was the gag reel during the credits at the end. I've never seen that in an Indian film, and it was really a treat.
So there you go. It's definitely not a good film, but if you have a desire to see any of the above, and really have nothing better to do, go for it.

Sounds great! What about the action scenes, any good? Is there an english-subtitled dvd available?

"Great" it definitely wasn't!
Like I said, most of the scenes were straight out of films like Once Upon a Time in the West, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars, etc. So the action was mostly shootouts, with a few standard fist fights with ugly goondas thrown in. Nothing to write home about.
My DVD, a Volga release bought from anytamil.com, didn't have subtitles.

Thanks for the heads up Nina.
I will have to go there eventually, but only so I can gawp at Mahesh Babu Wink. Will probably wait until there are subtitles available though (even though it sounds as like this may not really help) which might well be ages given it's a Telegu film and they are so slow to do the subtitle thing and it doesn't really sound like the kind of film you'd rush out to buy (apart from the obvious reason of course).

For those who don't know, Mahesh Babu is the son of Krishna, a major star of Telugu cinema during the 70's and 80's. (Indeed, he was the first for whom his fans coined the term "superstar", other more laudatory terms being already taken by the stalwarts NTR and ANR. Smiley Also, as a slight aside, his mother is the former heroine Vijaya Nirmala, who was herself a major star at the same time as her husband; but more importantly, she directed him in one or two films in the 70's, and by the 80's decided to concentrate on directing, and today holds the Guinnes' world record as the female director who has directed the most number of films -- I forget if it's 22 or 32.)
Anyway, the point I wanted to make was that, during the 70's, when Krishna had to carve a niche for himself in the market (again to compete with NTR and ANR, who had pretty much sewed up the romance, social, folk tale, and "mythological" genres), he made a series of action films which were indeed copies of Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns, which were all the rage internationally then. Thus Krishna was anointed as the "action star", and his wife, that is, Mahesh Babu's mother, acted as the heroine in quite a few of them (though at that time the two weren't yet married). What made it really bizarre in my eyes was that they made absolutely no effort to "Indianize" the films, so that you had both the hero and heroine (not to mention all their henchmen and the villain) decked out in leather breeches, cowboy boots, bolo ties, and of course, ten gallon hats, and wielding six-shooters. Perhaps it was this novelty factor which made the films hits.
"Takkari Donga" ("Tricky Thief") is a remake of one of Krishna's hits of this genre, as I recall reading in some Telugu magazine, though now I've forgotten which one. So that explains the Sergio Leone allusions. Smiley
As for objectification of the actresses, it is an accepted truism in the south Indian industies that the only reason to bring in actresses from Bollywood is that they are willing to expose far more than south Indian actresses. Hence this is no surprise.

Thanks Wannabe! It's interesting to know the context that this is a father --> son remake, and also to learn that "Andhra Westerns" are in fact nothing new!

I thought it may interest peeps to know that both Krishna and his son, Mahesh Babu are both to receive awards at the Nandi Awards function on 8th November. Krishna is to receive the NTR Memorial Award for services to the Telugu film industry whilst, Mahesh is to collect the Best Actor Award for Athadu.
Back to the topic on hand with a few stills from musicindiaonline:
Mahesh takes it easy.
Mahesh with Lisa.
Cowgal Bips.
Could it be that Rahul Dev plays the baddie in this film? Roll Eyes
Mahesh with the gals.
There are more stills via the link above.
It's a shame that there are no subtitles but, the DVD is strangely available at bhavani though not at Kad, despite being a Kad DVD.
News of awards for Krishna and Mahesh Babu at ragalahari.

I watched this movie years ago when I was starting to get back into watching newer Indian films. I was intrigued by the DVD cover with all the cowboy stuff on it. Nina summed up my thoughts on it. Its an interesting curio. Kind of entertaining, though not especially well done.

From the description on IMDB:
Quote
"Outlaw in the Indian (not Native American) wild west shoots it out with bad guys over a girl and a diamond mine."
At this moment, I have to say, this is my favorite thing ever! Western + Telugu masala + Mahesh + pretty pictures of the Entrada Sandstone= AWESOME.
Seriously, if you are having any doubts, at least watch the first song, in which Mahesh Babu wears a variety of atrocious vests and fringed shirts. This is the Mahesh fangirl in me speaking, but this movie is more of the Pokiri-type character, but in cowboy gear, and smoking cheroots instead of cigarettes.
I watched it without subtitles (I don't think a subbed version exists, and sadly, probably never will), but it pretty much made sense. I just loved the commitment to the idea of the Indian western, and how it maintained a pretty* unified theme throughout the film. I thought they did a great job of utilizing the Utah locations, and mostly seemlessly transitioning to Indian ones.
*Some deviations/transitions from the "Old West" to "Indian Old West" that cracked me up:
-in one of the town sets, it's all very old West-y, but the cattle are all Zebu/Brahma cows, not the longhorns you'd see in an American western.
-the cobras that threaten Mahesh's horse have rattlesnake sound effects
-the lions are African/Asian lions (Pantero leo), not the cougars (Puma concolor) you'd see in the American west.
-apparently, in the "Indian Old West" there are elasticized bras that you can use as slingshots. (not sure if it's anachronistic, but that scene amused me.)
I loved how in some of the song picturizations they were wearing contemporary clothing, because I guess it makes sense that the fantasy aspect of the songs would be about "the future." There were some great scenes where they were riding across the desert, and there was really classic Ennio Morricone-type music playing. I also caught snippets of the Addams Family theme and the Indiana Jones theme in there.
Overall, the violence seemed more like typical "Western" violence, and less like typical South Indian film violence, EXCEPT for all of the hand violence, which was kind of brutal. (A few years back, when Stephen Colbert broke his wrist, he did this hilarious montage of movie scenes with people getting their hands broken--this film could fill a whole montage.) There was a satisfying scene of "death by stalactite", so good use of cave features, there.
I had only one point of confusion without subtitles, so a question for anyone who's seen and understood the film: Mahesh is all ready to smash Rahul Dev's head with a rock, then Rahul Dev says something that makes Mahesh's head spin, and he throws the rock away. What happened there?

I am so going to have to track down some of these movies, they sound equally awesome. So, if there was a trend of South Indian "Westerns" do they have a nickname? Like "Biryani Westerns" or "Upma Westerns" instead of "Spaghetti Westerns"? Or would Masala Western be the most appropriate?

Based on your glowing recommedation dustdevil, I was brave and found this movie. It seems weird to watch it without the subs, but I will attempt it. I do love Mahesh, so we will see if it was worth it...

Found this on YouTube last night, so decided to give it a shot.
Mahesh Babu as a Wild Wild West cowboy. Shocked Shocked
Also, for those of you who liked Rahul Dev, "Bheema" in Asoka, he is the bad guy in this one.
It was the silliest thing I have ever seen. If you ever need a good laugh, this is the movie to watch.
Violence galore but it gets ridiculous because all the characters are dressed in chaps and ten gallon hats and they speak, ***drum roll***, Telegu!
It had no subs, but the plot was simple enough to understand. I don't think I missed much.
If anyone has a copy with subs or knows Telegu, would you please explain why Mahesh decides to help the bad guy reach the "Diamond Valley"? Thanks.
All in all, not very deep but a fun movie to chase away the blues.

whoa, just watched the first 15 mins of this and it IS unbelievable. Is it honestly supposed to be set in the Wild West? There are Indian trains. AND COWBOYS. aww, and a WANTED poster. No dancing yet, no love story yet. As much as I love Mahesh - I don't think I'll keep watching this.

Only continue if you want a good laugh. It's really nothing spectacular except for the unusual setting.
I think it's supposed to be in the Indian Wild West, in an alternate universe. India as such didn't have a historical Wild West as the US did.

According to the back of the DVD case, Rahul Dev tells Mahesh that he knows who murdered Mahesh's dad and will tell him about it if he helps him get to the diamond valley. (Well, technically the back of the DVD cover says "Knowing all this the villain tells Mahesh that he would tell him about the Murderer of his family Mahesh without knowing accepts him and decides to show the map Form now the story tells how he finds the murdere..........")

I believe they are or were referred to as "Curry Westerns" -though what part of my subconscience remembers that I have know idea. The names "Spaghetti Western" and "Curry Western" are in the same time and place in my memory and go way back. I have always known the term "Curry Western" even though I haven't always known about Indian movies. Strange. Huh

I haven't watched this yet but I found an old interview where Mahesh talks about it. Relevent movie excerpts and the link to the article.
It's been more than a week since Takkari Donga is released. What is the commercial outcome of the film?
Commercially, I think, Takkari Donga is a huge hit. The figures are there for everybody to see. There is no comparison with the other films released in this season. Jayant and I are on high right now. It's really satisfying after working hard for one year.
Did you get to hear any critical remarks made by industry?
Yes, there is some criticism by the industry people. They say that there is no story in this film. Right from the day of the start of shooting, we kept on saying that there would be no story in the film. What kind of story can we write for a cowboy film? Cowboy film is an adventure. Takkari Donga is a two and half hour adventure film. That's what we had in mind. That's why I has to do those risky shots. I would not be doing that for other films.
Did you watch any cowboy films to observe how cowboy behaves when u accepted 'Takkari Donga'?
No. That's the one thing I deliberately avoided. If I watch cowboy films, I will get into that mode. That's the reason why I acted very naturally in 'Takkari Donga'. I did not follow any style or whatever. We did not even rehearse most of the scenes. I did the shots spontaneously.
There is a critical comment on the film that the hard work and efforts put on this film was not effectively made an impact on the screen to influence the audience to a higher lever. What do you feel about it?
Today is 11th day and the theaters are packed. If the movie did not make any impact it shows up in the collections. If a film is not good, the collections drop on 3rd or 4th day. For a crazy product like this the collections may fall on 7th day. What about now? Saying 'what efforts we put in did not transform on the screen effective' is rubbish. You can see every frame in the film and you can see our efforts right there. It's not a normal Telugu film. Compared to the Telugu film standards, that's much much high! That's what we wanted to do. And, we did it with in the available budget.
Few characters of the film are missing in the end.
Like what?
The characters of little dog, Tanikella Bharani, Surya, Raj ….
Those are very minor details. Fine. Dog is not there in the end. But it's not a major problem. Why do you scrutinize this film like an Oscar film? It's a basic entertainment film. We had the length problem in the film. If we had shown the logical conclusion for all the characters, the film would have taken 3 hour 45 minutes to 4-hour duration. We made the film little crisp.
Are you planning for any post release promotional activities for Takkari Donga like going for road shows (Vijaya yatra) etc?
No. We are not. We don't need that.
Tell us about Jayant as producer.
He is unbelievable. Initially, I thought the production would hamper his direction work. But it did not affect him at all. The product is out there and it's like a big treat to us.
You have become very selective about picking the right films and there seems to be a huge gap between two releases. Are the fans happy about it?
The big gap is there only between Murari and Takkari Donga. For other films there would not be so much gap. Takkari Donga need this much of time for production. All the action sequences are very complicated. Rains and delay in USA schedule added to it and the product was delayed.
You have got the most loyal and passionate fan following among Telugu film lovers who are living in AP and across the world. Do you have any words for them?
From the beginning I have been saying that I am very lucky to have fans like that. At the same time, I am scared of them also. Because, they rip my films apart if they don't like them. They all loved 'Takkari Donga'. They call me up and say that I don't need to do risky shots like that. What would happen if something goes wrong? That's a personal kick. If they say that …it infers that I have succeeded in what I was supposed to do in Takkari Donga. I am very happy.
Do you think its necessary for you to do such a risky shots in 'Takkari Donga'?
For a film like this, Yes! Otherwise what specialty we are offering to the audience? Just showing Grand Canyon?? No! You have to do something special!!
When working for films, are there any incidents you differed with director for the betterment of product?
I don't differ with the director during the making of film. You have to believe in the film to able to work with. Only for the third film, there was such argument as we entered the shooting without script in the hand.
What is the response of Superstar Krishna for 'Takkari Donga'?
He loved the film. At the same time, he was upset about the risky shots I have done. He told that I should not have done those shots. Nobody knows about these shots till the film was released. I did not tell him prior to that either. After watching the film, he asked if we used any graphics. Though upset, he was also proud about those shots as nobody has done it before.
After a decade, if you get an opportunity to do a cowboy film again will you be a game?
May be not. My physical condition would not be suitable. I know how much hard we worked. I am 24-25 now. After each and every schedule of Takkari Donga, parts of my body would ache. After 10 years, I don't think my physical condition would permit.

I think I may end up trying to buy the DVD. That would make it my first Bolly/Tolly/Kolly with NO subs. But I think, I seriously suspect, that Mahesh will pull me through. AND that I will need to have the DVD for repeat crush-feeding views when I come home from the pub want to analyze Telugu Cinema. Grin

OK, I'm actually on the verge of contacting this company, just to find out what it would cost to have it subtitled. Or, if I go see Varudu this weekend, I should see if anyone would be willing to provide rudimentary subtitles or English language commentary. (Or even go on craigslist. Even a breakdown of some key lines of dialog would be fun.)

Yeah I want to know why Lisa Ray's charactor tries to get his pants off. (Besides that Wink) She finds a naked baby picture and seems to be relieved. Was she trying to see if he was circumcized??

Yeah I want to know why Lisa Ray's charactor tries to get his pants off. (Besides that Wink) She finds a naked baby picture and seems to be relieved. Was she trying to see if he was circumcized??
Now I remember reading what she is searching for. Grin

I forgot to add I am loving it so far. It is comical and I think that's what its supposed to be.

Hey I just finished it too! I watched it twice this week without subs and then now again with. Love it! I am wondering if the last dialogue with his Dad are taken from Superstar Krishna's movies. Anyone know?

Taxes. What taxes? I usually have my taxes done by Feb. 14. This year I have been side tracked by the likes of Mahesh Babu and Prabhas and Vikram.
You know you are addicted to SI movies when....
Don't get me wrong. I am one of those weird people who love doing taxes. If I had to work, I'd work at H&R Block. I feel like I have climbed Mt. Everest when I finish doing our taxes. But this year every time I sit down at the computer and instead of starting to work, I check the BB posts and three hours later, I have done nothing about our taxes but watched another SI movie.
I might actually have to file an extension this year.

I am so excited that I can finally watch this with subs! I have it without the subs and only watched a few pieces. Thanks so much for the tip. I'm going all geeky and downloading it from YouTube to watch later (in annoying 10 minute segments), but at least I'll know what is going on. Mahesh in a cowboy hat - how yummy is that?!

Aargh, I loved it without subs, but now with subs, it's likely to become my favorite Mahesh movie ever. The dialogue in the "snakebite" scene is great, and now I understand why he doesn't bash Rahul Dev's head in.

This, a thousand times, yes Grin And cowboy boots, and jeans. On a horse. Plus I really do love Bips and Lisa Ray (not so much their performances in this movie, but just overall, so it's icing on the cake that they are both in it.)

So where do you suppose he learned to ride a horse? (I've often wondered that about lots of the stars) I know horses are asian etc... but isn't he a city boy? And I wonder if he kept the chaps?.... Evil

Ok, guys, I'm sitting down to watch this, even though I know I won't get through much. A friend is coming over later and then tonight I'm hosting Bollywood night. (I wish I could sneak some Tolly in there, but I don't think they're ready yet...)
Mahesh in chaps, here I come! Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Oh Thank You MinaiMinai for posting this very important find.
This was not nearly as bad as I thought it would probably be although it took a little while to get going - it was only the glimpses of Mahesh that got me through the first few parts. But then the actual story got going, Mahesh was more readily seen, and everything was alright.
I particularly appreciated the snake bite scene, fluffy dog rescue from the bridge, rattlesnakey cobras and cowboy outfits - although I wasn't previously aware that midriff revealing and/or backless tops and petticoatless skirts were a feature of old west women's fashion. Nor PVC catsuits for that matter. And I never knew diamonds were so easy to mine once you know where they are. So this film was clearly of educative value as well Wink.
Does anyone know the particular stunt bits that Mahesh's Dad was not impressed that he did and he was talking about in the interview posted further back in the thread?

I was thinking about the stunt thing too. It might be the scene on the bridge where he rescues the dog.

Repeling down a cliff if you have never done it befor can seem dangerous also going into the rapids. The bridge scene definetly looked risky, some of the stuff on the train in the beginning looked risky to me, but I don't know how they are shot.

I'm buying this one. I appreciate YouTube for the incredible amounts of joy I'm feeling at the moment, but the quality just wasn't good enough. There are so many parts I want to screencap... And if anyone already owns the film and wants me to be their best friend, if you could make an animated avi of the last shot of Mahesh pointing to the camera I might just sell my soul!!!
There are not enough words to express how happy this ridiculous movie made me...

I'm just so ridiculously happy that there is this sudden surge of love for this movie. I do love Mahesh in this, but I also have a tremendous amount of fondness for the moviie itself.
One thing that I love about it, is that it's also just a straightforward, fun "cowboy movie." Hollywood doesn't make those anymore. I know a lot of the jokes and plot twists are probably stolen from other movies (the snakebite, Bips pretending to be blind, the bathtub scene, rescuing the dog, the search for the diamonds, Mahesh spinning his six-shooters, the bra slingshot), but they are just solid, fun things and it's great to see them executed with such joy and silliness. And as I commented before, I think the location shots and all of the India-Old West stuff are really well done.

And how about the bloopers at the end?!! I couldn't believe that-- 100% joy. Grin
There're bloopers?? They are usually the best part of a movie (obviously not of a Mahesh movie Wink)Evil, evil, bachelor thesis, why do I have to write you... I'm so going to reward myself with this movie on saturday.. expect to see me here gushing over it, because I'm already sold on the pictures posted here Cool Grin

You guys. You guys. This:
is my new favourite thing.
I spent the first part of this movie thinking "this is bananas" but at some point (I think it might have been the snakebite scene Embarrassed) I stopped noticing how bizarre it all was and just went along for the ride. I think it's hilarious that you're all tweeting Mahesh questions about this movie. He really is going be like "what the heck is going on?" Personally, I now hope I run into Lisa Ray around town one of these days so I can ask her "What's Mahesh Babu like???"
One thing's for sure, he makes a damn fine cowboy:

EXACTLY! I couldn't have said it better myself! At some point, after a while, you just buy into and grin like an idiot. The credit bloopers at the end were so fun! I love the one where Mahesh falls down and kinda slides into another guy and gives the camera this exasperated look.
I do like him in the whole cowboy outfit thing, EXCEPT for that weird green fringed western shirt and the purple one in one of the songs. Obviously Prabhas' wardrobe guy snuck in and made Mahesh wear those outfits:
We forgive you Mahesh for the bad costumes, cuz the in the rest of the movie you look awesome!

You guys! I sent a message to the personwho posted on it youtube, to ask which DVD had the subs. Turns out that this person actually did the subs themselves, which is kind of awesome. I sent them a message saying thanks, and I'd encourage everyone else who's life has been touched by the subtitled version of this classic ( Wink Wink) to post a comment of thanks.

I was lucky enough that Bollywhat's resident snake fancier jenni downloaded the YT clips and burned a DVD for me to further encourage me to watch this. And it is lots of fun, but more of the SBIG kind for me. But it reminded me a bit of the Terence Hill/Bud Spencer Trinity films in its tongue-in-cheek cowboy style. I was impressed by the number of hats Mahesh possessed when he was basically a homeless loner in a mission of revenge.

Could it be that Rahul Dev plays the baddie in this film? Roll Eyes
Mahesh with the gals.
There are more stills via the link above.
It's a shame that there are no subtitles but, the DVD is strangely available at bhavani though not at Kad, despite being a Kad DVD.

I watched this recently and I have to agree with Dustdevil-- this is all kinds of awesome!
Mahesh saveing a cute fluffy puppy! Twice!
Mahesh in shiny pants!
Mahesh in chaps!
Mahesh in buckskin!
Awesome!
I believe his Dad shows up at the end ya?
It is clearly meant to be a comedy, I really wish there were subs available for this.

Taxes.

I asked about Takkari Donga too! And I asked him if he would make another Cowboy movie. I restrained myself from asking him if he kept his chaps though Evil

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I've had this dvd for several years but no subs. I wanted it anyways because it has Bips (that's how I discovered Mahesh Babu) but now I could enjoy the movie with subs.

More notes and dodgy screencaps up on the blog cinemachaat.wordpress.com/2012/10/29/takkari-donga/ -
