First day was 6.6 crore, which seems respectable for an industry kid's sophomore vehicle, with a mildly popular foreign model and a Tollywood-based starlet as his leading ladies. It's reputed to have had a largeish budget though, so it will have to do continue to do well. Twitter buzz seems positive, but Varun's fanbase is mostly young females, so that was to be expected. I've actually not seen any of director David Dhawan's films (Mujhse Shaadi Karoge and that remake thingie he did with Siddharth and Ali Zafar are on the list though); but he has a reputation as a maker of fairly broad, low-brow comedies, and I would be surprised if it got particularly good reviews. It's also worth keeping in mind that both this and the Siddharth/Ali Zafar thingie were for all intents and purposes co-directed by his son (and Varun's brother) Rohit Dhawan of Desi Boyz, due to the father's health problems. This was much better than I expected. It looked like yet another star kid movie, pushed forward by a doting industry dad to bore us all with weak material, bad acting, and a well-known name or two taking the money and phoning in performances. But in fact it was David Dhawan in fine form, with his repertory company as crazy as ever, a promising actor in Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruz doing her best with the role, and even Nargis Fakhri well cast.
The set-up is typical Dhawan: cocky but likeable hero with fists of steel, heroine(s) who are beautiful but with not a lot to do, scary potential father-in-law, comic gangsters, lots of wordplay and filmi references, Rajpal Yadav, Shakti Kapoor, mistaken identities, and ever-increasing levels of farce. If you know David Dhawan films, you'll know whether you will like this when I say it is a good recent effort: the material is as good as Partner or Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, but the leads don't have the comic skills of those films.
This was my first sight of Varun Dhawan, and he made a good job of the lead, being believably cocky but with enough charm to see him through, and he handled the usual broad Dhawan comedy well. Ileana D'Cruz is better than her part requires, but she plays it well, looks stunning, and the fans of her hips on this forum will have nothing to complain about. Nargis Fakhri is rubbish, of course, but that actually fits the role quite well, and her atrocious accent and clumsy acting are not the annoyance they might otherwise be. The usual Dhawan comedy suspects are all present and putting in performances that are hilarious if you like that sort of thing (which I do): Anupam Kher is the gangster father-in-law, whose last word of every sentence echoes because he comes from Manali; Shakti Kapoor is a treacherous gang member who speaks entirely in film titles; and Rajpal Yadav is the comedy sidekick of the villain who keeps getting shot. Arunoday Singh is also good: looking very like Aftab Shivdasani but six times the size, in the second half he is far more than just a thuggish rival to be outwitted by Varun.
I hesitate to recommend this film to everyone. If you like old-fashioned masala comedy, and David Dhawan in particular, then this is definitely worth a watch. If you yawn your way through that stuff, then this is probably not for you. but you'll be missing a really fun couple of hours out.

David Dhawan 90's comedies were so awesome. I have seen them all. His last three have been stinkers. We will be seeing this one tomorrow and I am having faint glimmers of hope. I talked about them a lot on the old site under I Love Govinda. Some are Coolie No.1 , Hero No.1 , Biwi No.1, Aaneken, Kunwara, Deewana Mastana. These will always make it to where Govinda is my second favorite actor. (SRK #1)

My favorite Govinda act is in Life Partner. He makes several other actors look like statues, IMNSHO. I find the dances for Biwi #1 awesome, especially the "Children On Stage" scene. BoxOfficeIndia: MTH grossed 20 crore = "Average" and lost about 2-3 more to cricket matches on Friday and Sunday. BOI finds it comparable to Shaadi Ke Side Effects, and MTH might do better if it holds up on the weekdays. Dancelover David Dhawan 90's comedies were so awesome. I have seen them all. Wasn't impressed by the film. Our hero has potential, however. But WAY better than the last three of his. But now I want to go back and see all the old Govinda films. That would be a project as I have almost all of them and there are over 100. And I saw them all.

From the recently viewed movies thread: Main Tera Hero ~ I am so glad I bought this. I found it totally enjoyable. Light-hearted, silly, slapsticky. Varun Dhawan is very likable and confident. I will definitely re-watch this whenever I need 2 hours of stress free (and nearly 100% dishoom free) entertainment. Though I was confused as to why Anupam Kher would play two completely unrelated roles in the movie, until I found out that it was actually his brother, who looks just like him. I'll make an effort to comment in the movie's thread.

Thanks Odadune! I'm finally making that effort I mentioned! I think the biggest surprise for me was the 2nd half. I was pretty much anticipating a change in tone to a more ominous thread with threat of harm, dishoom-violence, etc and a prolonged action/fighting sequence, and when the course of the movie never went that way my surprised was compounded because I DID find it so pleasant when I normally don't have a problem with it. I was very happy with Varun's performance, I never thought he was attractive before but he certainly was here and definitely part of it (other than his unapologetically rockin' bod) was his confidence, comic timing and real charm and sense that he really worked at it. I love enthusiasm and appreciate seeing it in star kids, esp. when they are starring in daddy's vehicle. I also want to mention how impressed I was with Arunoday Singh, who played villain-lite. He was realistically threatening but then so naturally funny in the second half. He has a great actor's face ~ I thought he looked like Mr. Bean/Rowan Atkinson on steroids. I did check out one of the older David Dhawan movies - I've watched a bit of Coolie #1; I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep so pulled it up on Youtube and watched about 20 mins of it. I'll liked it and will finish it, but maybe I liked it more that I thought because when I feel asleep I dreamed of Govinda big time. I'll have to check out Life Partner, too.
