I want a Bollywood Bewitched! The original series, not the movie. Staring... Tamannaah as Samantha Ranveer Singh as Daren Rekha as Endora I just see them fitting perfectly into the roles. The plot... I'm fuzzy on the plot. It is hard to take a sitcom to film format. Maybe something to do with Samantha's evil cousin? I just wouldn't want them to break-up Samantha and Daren at any point. While we're on that subject. I'd love to see a Bollywood "I Dream of Jeanie ". Ideally a younger Sridevi would have been perfect, but I think Deepika Padukone has the adorable chops to make it work. Maybe Vivek Oberoi as Tony. Another one I'd like to see, is maybe an adaptation of "Bogus". Also, "Arsenic and Old Lace". Perhaps with Shahid Kapoor or Abhishek Bachchan as Mortimer. Oh, yes! Jeanie is totally perfect for Bollywood. Sridevi would have been perfect, her eyes are as big as the cartoon Jeanie im the opening I don't think Ranranbolly was proposing "child star" Sridevi so much as "Sridevi in her heyday"-and Barbara Eden was 36 or so when the show started; not a "kid" by any means. I think there's people in Bollywood who'd get a kick out of Jeannie-there were a TON of 1001 Arabian Nights type movies back in the day. Trouble is, there are very few high-ranking actresses who can both dance and have comic timing in Bollywood right now, just Rani and maybe Priyanka. Deepika's okay on the latter but weak on the former IMO (and although very attractive totally not my idea of "cute" or "adorable" but maybe Chennai Express/Ram Leela will change my mind), and also someone who probably wouldn't carry off the clothes. I agree with you about Deepika. Preity Zinta would actaully be good for the role imo, but we know she's not really bankable now. What do you think about Kangana Ranaut?

Preity in her heyday would have been delightful in that role. As for Kangna, I've warmed up to her alot in recent months as an offscreen personality-she comes off as smart if a little eccentric in recent interviews, but I haven't seen enough of her in light-hearted roles to really have an opinion on what she would be like as Jeannie. Looking forward to Queen when it comes to dvd.

I've been doing a meme like this (bollywood recasts of some of my hollywood favorites) on my blog for awhile now, but the one I'm most excited about is a potential Bollywood adaptation of All About Eve (complete with a plot summary and gifs to complete the mental image: cosmickhaleesi.tumblr.com/post/81603536986/bollywood-recast-all-about-eve-small-town). I recently rewatched the movie and saw so many similarities in the story to the environment for actresses in Bollywood, especially the ageism re: Margo Channing's character. It has such strong roles for women. And I think the original is old enough that the Hindi film audience wouldn't be drawing constant comparisons to it. Yes, it's a classic, but I don't even know too many young Americans who have watched it. IMO, it's the movie Heroine could have and should have been. I also recently reread Oliver Twist and thought it'd make an excellent Bollywood adaptation. With Abhishek Kapoor doing a Dickens adaptation, maybe there's hope. I see Nawazuddin as Sikes, Parineeti as Nancy, and Nasseeruddin as Fagin. It's a shame Darsheel Safary grew up so fast, he would have made an excellent Dodger. And Rishi Kapoor would make the perfect Mr. Bumble. A lot of plot points could be cut out (the inclusion of both Brownlow AND the Maylies always felt convoluted to me), and it would make a great story of modern poverty with both dramatic and comedic elements and a potentially epic ensemble cast.

Yeah, I had seen that fantasy casting version of All About Eve, and really liked it. There's something a little sinister (or just uncanny-valley-ish) about Shraddha's screen persona that I think would work well in that role and Aish in the Bette Davis role is pretty cool.
I *think* (only ever seen it unsubbed) the old b-movie Chanda Aur Bijli is a loose Oliver Twist adaptation, with Master Sachin as the title character, Padmini (the Tamil dancer/actress) as an improbably bubbly Nancy, and a very young, bearded Sanjeev Kumar as a very defanged but still obnoxious Sikes.

It's not a film but I think Friends would adapt well. Funny you mention that! I made a Hindi version of Friends a while ago. I think it ended up something like this: Deepika Padukone - Rachel Anushka Sharma - Monica Kangana Ranaut - Phoebe Ranveer Singh - Joey Imran Khan - Chandler Ranbir Kapoor - Ross Maybe not the most perrrrfect group...tried to pick from the younger crowd in Bollywood.

I kind of want to see an Indian version of Big Jake. The original had John Wayne as a gruff old cowboy at the end of the Wild West era, trying to rescue his grandson Little Jake (who's like five or six) from a crazy outlaw (Richard Boone) who's injured the boy's father and is trying to ransom the kid. Jake is aided by his dog, his two younger sons (played by star kids Patrick Wayne and Chris Mitchum) and a biracial scout named Sam Sharpnose (Bruce Cabot). The South Indian versions would all star Prakash Raj as Big Jake, of course, and Naseer as the villain, but I haven't decided who the sons should be. For a Bollywood version, I would really want to replicate the John Wayne+Wayne's actual son+another starkid configuration, but unfortunately most of the men old enough to have sons that would work for that are in not great health, or not good enough to do a lot of physical stuff. Best bet might be Anil Kapoor+Arjun Kapoor+Harshvardan Kapoor (or Tiger Shroff) as the heroes, with a guest appearance by Madhuri or Sridevi as Jake's estranged wife (originated by Maureen O'Hara), and Jackie Shroff as the villain. maybe ditch the scout role altogether and just have the estranged wife join the rescue party. I always thought that The Music Man would make an interesting Bollywood film; Aaj Naachle kind of does the "outsider revitalizes a town by getting everyone interested in music" thing but not the con artist thing. I've given way too much thought to this one. In this version, Harold Hill, the con artist/"music professor in his own mind" originated by Robert Preston would be a wannabe dance instructor who drifts into a small town-just big enough to have television, and sets out to convince the locals that the best way to keep their sons out of trouble is to teach them modern dance so that they can be on one of those 500 talent shows on Indian tv. Marian the "stuck-up librarian who gives piano" and takes flak for making things like BAAALZAC! and Omar Khaiyyam available would in this version run a clothes-making business and get in trouble for making designer jeans knockoffs for the young women. And she would be a classically trained dancer. The film would be directed by either Farah Khan, Remo D'Souza or Prabhudheva (and partially choreographed by the other), with a strong producer on hand to deal with Remo's reputation for somewhat unfocused storytelling and/or quash Prabhudheva's penchant for off-color humor and/or Farah's problems with both storytelling and lowbrow humor. Casting: Harold Hill: you need someone with a big, brassy personality who dances with more energy than sophistication but is charismatic and fun to watch. Shahrukh Khan would figure out the character's motives (his unfulfilled passion for music and the fact that at some level he believes in his own con) most quickly, but Ranveer or Akshay would maybe handle the hyper-physical aspects of the role better. Most of the other current stars either are either too good as dancers (Ranbir/Shahid/Hrithik/Varun), have a screen persona/acting style that's not ideal (Arjun/Ayushmann/Aditya/Aamir/Salman) or both (hi Tiger!). If you were using the more boyish, less virile Matthew Broderick version of Harold Hill (from that awful tv version) as a role model, you could maybe get by with Saif or Sidharth. For a South Indian version, your best bet would be either Vijay or Ravi Teja, both of whom are right on the cusp of being too good as dancers to work in the role. Marian: You need a woman who can really dance, convey a lot of different emotions fairly well, and sass people with a certain amount of dignity. The best candidates would be Sridevi, Madhuri, Karishma or Aish, although your producers would probably restrict you to a 40+ year old Harold Hill if you cast one of these ladies. Your next best options are probably, in no particular order: Kangna Ranaut, Sonakshi Sinha, Shruti Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, Tamannaah Bhatia, or Lisa Haydon (if you could come up with an explanation for the accent). Please note that Madhuri and Karishma are the only ones who'd probably think twice about appearing in your South Indian version. If you have a really good film editor and a really good choreographer, you could also maybe use Katrina or Deepika. Marian's mother: Kirron Kher, of course. Mayor Shinn: Gulshan Grover in Hindi, Prakash Raj in everything else. Mrs. Shinn: You need someone who's funny and kind of intimidating, with a steamroller personality and the ability to carry off flashy clothes for Mrs. Shinn. I'm leaning towards Dimple or Rekha for the character.

FWIW, I took Emily's comment as "had worked out how to cast a Bollywood version of Friends". So far as I know, none of the regulars here are in show business.

I was sitting and thinking just now about how cool a Bollywood adaptation of Around the World in Eighty Days could be. I'd love for it to be a period film, and instead of the guy starting his circumnavigation in London, he could start in Bombay, since part of the plot is about the new section of railway opening in India.
I can't really say as far as cast goes...I just know I want Nawazuddin Siddiqui involved!

I can't really say as far as cast goes...I just know I want Nawazuddin Siddiqui involved! That sounds like fun...you could have the sort-of antagonist who bets against the Phineas Fogg analogue be British, and Phineas and Passepartout be Indian. You could even riff on some of Jules Verne's other works that reference India, like that obscure book with the house on wheels pulled by a steampunk metal elephant, or have an Indian prince (the future Captain Nemo) who shows Phineas his designs for a submarine called the Nautilus. Nawazuddin Siddiqui would be good as the Phineas analogue. How you cast Passepartout (acrobat, comedian and jack of all trades) depends on whether you see him as a sidekick or a co-protagonist. For the former, I would go with Javed Jaffrey or Arshad Warsi. Co-Protagonist...Varun, Shahid, Ravi Teja (making his Hindi language debut), Akki...someone in that style. For the Princess, I don't think the hypothetical producer could do better than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, especially if they're using someone like Nawazuddin as the Phineas analogue, but if you think she wouldn't "settle" for that kind of supporting role, maybe Sonakshi would do.

^ I was thinking Varun for Passepartout...IIRC, Passepartout is younger than Phineas Fogg. And Nawaz and Varun did very well together in Badlapur, so that would work.
You're totally right on the princess role. It's a very supporting, limited kind of character. Someone lesser known/newer might be good for that.
Around the World was one of my favorite books growing up and I still haven't found a film that's done it justice in my mind. Shame.
