I finally got around to watching Duplicate. I think SRK had a ball playing the goofy Bablu and contrasting with the psychotic Manu. Silly and fun.

Dilwale 6/10Watched with a friend, another Bollywood enthusiast. We both had low expectations so we enjoyed it in general. SRK-Kajol pairing, beautiful scenery, tuneful songs, overall coloring in the movie, SRK in stubble kinda made up for ridiculous storyline, scenes that felt incomplete, forced humour etc.

Mehooba (2008) Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn and Manisha Koirala. According to Wiki the film was a failure at the box office and eventually termed a disaster. Actually it wasn't all that bad. Apparently it took 8 years to be completed and you can see that the actors have aged in it. And Manisha's hair changed length constantly, which was a bit distracting. But the story was interesting if a bit unbelievable. There were a lot of actors I recognized playing bit/supporting roles, including Bindu as aunty.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) - Wouldn't have sought it out myself, but my roommate made me sit down and watch this. Very cute movie. I love the fact that the couple aren't perfect. The girl isn't a classically thin waif. The husband isn't a college graduate or a rich man's son. They have issues. They fight. They're young. And it's just a wonderful movie. I would recommend this to anyone, Bollywood lovers or not.

A few weeks ago I saw Netflix had Shahid and started to watch but the subtitles were way out of sync. Someone must have complained (or let them know) - when I checked it out again all was fixed. So watched. Very good movie but such a tragedy Kal Ho Naa Ho - watched it years ago and had quite forgotten that Kajol and Rani have 'special appearances' in the Mahive song. I also spotted Uday Chopra in a very short speaking cameo role (I think he said 'Day four' - or something like that - a bit like Kajol's walk-on/walk-off in Duplicate, lol)). When I first saw the movie I wouldn't have known who he was. And I could be wrong but I think I spotted Farah Khan as one of the sitting down customers when the Indian restaurant opened.

Saw two this weekend from opposite ends of the spectrum: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Knock Out, for opposite reasons: PRDP looked fun and I thought I could gag it down even though I don't like Salman, and K.O. looked not so great but I thought I'd sit through it because I love Irrfan. The movies actually complement each other perfectly. I posted about PRDP in Film Fair; it was fairly fun and enjoyable, but I had to take a break from the sugar to watch K.O., which I sort of thought would be a gritty revenge drama. It starts off that way but reveals a big warm fuzzy patriotic heart about half-way through. In PRDP I got to enjoy music and dances and Sonam's plethora of costume changes; in K.O. there is one very memorable dance but no real music and no costume changes and Irrfan sort of looks like he's coated in oil for most of it. Both were perfectly nice time-passes, but I wouldn't give either an award.

Khoobsurat-- This was so exactly what one would expect from a Bollywood rom-com that Disney got involved with that it was almost eerie. But Sonam did a decent job and was very cute, and Fawad looked fantastic. Everything clicked along as expected. It wasn't a terrible watch, it had some fun parts, but it certainly wasn't anything to get excited about.

Jazbaa is just awful, to the point where it can't even be redeemed by the presence of Irrfan or Shabana Azmi. Aishwarya is determined to just act her ass off in her comeback and there is screaming, crying, and rolling in the dirt. Then she does it again about three minutes later. Irrfan plays the kind of police officer who says "Jai Hind" sardonically to himself with a drink in his hand. I came to think of this movie as the anti-Mardaani : Aishwarya is supposed to be a fierce, tough lawyer in a pantsuit, but she has to be rescued by Irrfan and she is repeatedly shamed for going to work instead of playing with her daughter all day. There are huge holes in the plot, and one is really unforgivable (by me, anyway).

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) - Masala. Felt like they struggled to really drag out the story as long as they managed. But Salman played a pretty cute character. Would have honestly liked to have seen more of Deepak Dobriyal. His character was hilarious, and would have been a more interesting expanded side-story.

Recent viewings -
Irudhi Suttru - the Tamil version of Saala Khadoos. Madhavan looking hunk-like.
Meet the Patels - the thing I found the most hilarious is that there is actually a Patel Matrimonial Convention!
The Bright Day - came across this on Netflix. A young man's journey to discover what he wants from life.
Tere Bin Laden - crazy and fun.
And also, not Bollywood, The Lady in the Van - Maggie Smith brilliant, as always.

Finished Daag, a Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore vehicle, this evening. This movie is like someone took all the plot points of Aradhana and shook them up and made another movie--secret marriage, inconvenient pregnancy, attempted rape, self-defense killing, Rajesh dead (or "dead"). I think Aradhana is awesome, so this was OK by me. The big difference is that Daag, as Ira Glass would say, acknowledges the existence of sex. Rajesh and Sharmila aren't dancing around a fire or tree, they're rolling around on a bed, albeit fully clothed and with no kissing. Sharmila wears some truly hideous outfits until her marriage, and everyone has unflattering orange makeup. I was mesmerized by the child actor playing Sharmila's son and the adorable awkwardness he brings to the part. He must have been around three and he has a perpetual attitude of perplexity. When Sharmila sobs and grabs his head he looks straight ahead with an expression of "um, okay." I thought that must have been it for his career, but I found him on IMDB and some forty years later he is actually still a working actor--he was in Cocktail. (I'm sure he can act better now).

Happy New Year (2014): I expected so much from this movie, after having seen the good Main Hoon Na and the excellent Om Shanti Om, that it was a huge disappointment during 3 hours. Bad acting, even Abishek loses his charisma... No emotion, no magic, except in the clip: The fire is a very good idea, Farah Khan is so ingenious, I would have loved to see more choreographies. Rocky (1981) I bought a DVD without subtitles! And I can't find them on the web. So, I ask you, if you have the DVD, could you please extract the subs and send them to me?

Lootera--How did it take me so long to see this??? This movie is GORGEOUS. It’s slow-moving, so don’t try to watch it when you’re sleepy. It’s worth your wakeful attention. Lovely music, too. This is the best I’ve seen Sonakshi (love her!) and it just may be the best I’ve seen Ranveer, too. Or at least a tie. I also loved learning about the whole zamindar abolition thing. I hadn’t known about that before, and it was handled so well, where you understood why it was happening but you were still sad for Sonakshi’s dad. Great performances all around.

Traffic - interesting and worth a second watch some time.
Har Har Byomkesh - a Bengali Byomkesh Bakshi tale which I think I preferred to last year's Detective Byomkesh Baksi. Set in 1946-ish.
Airlift - second viewing and hubby watched (because it was based on a real event and wasn't frivolous...) too.

Well, I couldn't see this DVD, because it has no subtitles! Has someone seen this movie, and have you subs for it, please?
