Talaash -- did enjoy it more than expected. I liked the convoluted plot and supernatural element in an acceptable (i.e. no vampire, no wherewolves, no zombies) to me way. Very satisfying ending in reviewing after watching.

Nuvve Nuvve - 2002 Telugu - Tarun, Shriya, Prakash Raj - from Netflix DVD list. Got it mainly to see Shriya and Prakash Raj (2 favorites). Bit of a let down, the jodi didn't work for us, Prakash Raj is always good, but they didn't give him much to do except scowl and bluster. Tarun had the standard issue 'treat the girl like crap, and she'll fall for you 'CAUSE YOU CARE' SI thing going, was not cute. Didn't even give Shriya any good dance numbers, and that's a crime.
Irandaam Ulagam - 2013 Tamil - Arya and Anushka Shetty - watched streaming from einthusan.com - could have been better, had all the elements, but still enjoyed the dual story/dual world fantasy thing. We like both actors a lot, so lots for us to enjoy, double/double roles.

Shorts (2013) - a compilation of 5 short (20 minutes or so) thought provoking movies. The first concerns a woman who has been tormented and threatened by her male cousin for most of her life. She is driven to drastic measures.
The second, which I found most puzzling, concerns a man (maybe/maybe not gay) seemingly being teased/provoked by the bizarre behaviour of a young woman - yet he seems to be indifferent to what is going on around him (or is he?)
The third - a teenage girl rebelling against her conservative father's wishes.
the fourth - Nawazuddin Siddiqi plays a man who illegally disposes of the dead during the night. He secretly admires a young woman... No spoilers...
The fifth - filmed in and around Dharavi, a woman toils to support her out-of-work husband, her shrew of a mother-in-law and her young son. Hubby has a near death experience - will his attitude change?
Death (or the threat of it) is a common thread and also in three of these shorts there is seen that archaic attitude of "I'm the man, you are the mere woman/wife. Your opinion/desires/happiness/whatever count for nothing".
More Art House than mainstream BW but worth watching if you can - I saw it on Spuul.

ABCD: Any Body Can Dance (2013) - You know, as bad as the title may seem...not a bad film. Fun dance-themed film. Some decent songs, but some really impressive dancing. One of those films on Netflix instant that's definitely worth checking out when you're just in the mood for a BW movie.

Bandini (1963) : Nice atmosphere in the first half, then the flashback is disappointing, and I really dislike the end. Some songs are really good. B & W, but the frame is very recherché. 12/20
Ishqiya (2010) : not bad, but could have been even better. I'll try to make my first review in the Film Fair forum (I think it's the good place) Good picture (images), good sound, good music, good story (except some scenes), good actors, but I put only 14/20

Ship of Theseus - was watching this afternoon (on SominalTV) when the subtitles cut out at about an hour before the end at the start of the third character story. Hopefully they will get that sorted out and I'll carry on with it another day.

Ram Leela - am disappointed because I love all SLB films barring Guzaarish. There is only as many loopholes one can take and somebody needs to explain Bhansali that hundred and one kisses do not equal to chemistry. I enjoyed some of it, but it doesn´t aspire to be among my favourite films.

Jai Ho - Jai Ho hum for me. I probably wouldn't watch it again. It starts with what I call a cartoon fight scene (much breaking of glass and furniture but no-one gets hurt) but later escalates into real biffo with people getting shot, stabbed, bashed and the works. A bit too much of the one army....it did get a bit tiresome, IMHO. There was also the slightly over acted comedy element, the psychotic politician and his henchmen including the bad cops, plenty of good guys and the feisty kid - played by Naman Jain who was also a standout in Bombay Talkies. Maybe one or two too many songs....but that's just my opinion.

Shuddh Desi RomanceThis is definitely a Bollywood film with greatest ammount of (awkward) kissing and rolling together in bed I have seen so far. Why does "modern" and "cool" image has to be always linked with smoking, drinking and sleeping and sex anyway? The commitment phobia bit of the story works well enough to move the film from one point to another, but looses breath in the progress, that too quite early on. Fortunatelly we have Parineeti, who looks lovely, and gives us a good performance. She is not the mad agressive cuckoo from Ishaqzaade and neither does she resemble her character from her debut film, in fact for the first time she manages to project vulnerability and a guarded personality. She is still only second to the best - because that title belongs to wonderfully effortless Rishi Kapoor. Sushant is OK. Newcomer and Meenakshi Sheshadri look-a-like Vaani is only so-so, and resemblance to the famous actress non withstanding, she is not too pleasant to the eye, somehow lacks charm. The characters are confused all the time, and managed to confuse me as well. I did not understand their thought-process and kept waiting forever for some explanation - which comes in a form of "message" of sorts - that marriage is not for everybody (was that it? I think so....). Jeeeeeeez. I was actually hoping Gayatri {Click to view!} had some really dark secret that prevented her from going through the marriage and that we would learn about it and solve it with her. And since the girls want the guy so bad, one would expect them to, you know, actually put up a little effort to get him.
5/10

You may or may not know that Australia's national summer sport is cricket. Since Jan 26th is Australia Day and Indian Republic Day I watched Lagaan - even though I'm not terribly interested in cricket...

Phata Poster Nikla Hero
Armed low expectations and forgiving mood I found Phata Poster Nikla Hero a harmless movie with some fun and no consequences that would matter. The story is sweet, even though simple - a boy grows up with big dreams of becoming a film star, while his mother is adamant he should become a police officer. The most imaandaar police officer there ever was. The clash between two dreams leads to mess of a situation which entertained me for most part and gave me few good laughs as well. The comedy is effortless and really well done, unfortunately the film attempts to mix in some emotional blackmail and family drama, and that is what actually brings it down to its knees. I becomes boring in those moments, almost unbearably so. The ending was a bit unclear (or maybe I actually fell asleep and that is why I don´t know what exactly happened to "Napoleon"?) and I was expecting some new comical twist before the closing titles started rolling, but my waiting was in vain.
Shahid Kapoor is excellent. He really shows how talented he is and how easy it is for him to convey the emotions. Unfortunatelly he cannot choose films. Ileana, who charmed me in Barfi last year, is lovely, but doesn´t have the ability to raise a poorly written character into something better. It was lovely to see Padmini Kolhapure (who gets more scope and imporatnce than "Complaint Kajal"), however she was from that crop of slightly mental Maas of the 80s and I had to roll my eyes at her logic in few moments. Other supporting actors do really well. Salman Khan´s cameo was excellent!
When you have Shahid Kapoor, you expect a kick-ass dance number, but even though there are several song, there is not a single one that would utilize his dancing proweness, and frankly apart from Main Rang Sharbaton Ka none is worth a re-watch or second listen. Nargis Fakhri looks sexy in the itme girl avatar, but she gets owned in dancing even by the extras behind her.
4,5/10
