I wonder if Dedh Ishqiya will do better overseas? The showing we saw on Sunday was almost completely full. It only has three showings per day, compared with at least a dozen for Dhoom 3 when that opened, but I was still pleasantly surprised at the turnout; and the audience all seemed to be really enjoying it.

According to reports it is full houses in Pakistan too. www.chennaivision.com/news/2014/65543.php?ref=tw#sthash.hr32o8Nw.dpufBTW - given what Madhuri freak I am, and given I have nowhere to go to watch the film..... I have to admit I watched a cam print. Bad one. But that was not enough to discourage me. And I absolutely LOVED the movie. Will post my views later

Saw it tonight. The movie is very edgy with many twists and turns. It is a must watch though if MPAA had to rate it, it would definitely get an "R" rating for violence, adult situations and language. Go see it without your children.

The film is flopping badly and it leaves me very bitter, especially when I look around and see WHAT films were money spinners. I see myself being less and less tolerant to movies I find bad in the future. Also makes me wonder what exactly made first Ishqiya hit - and I think the answer is horny Indians. If there is something DI does not have it is sexual undertones and energy all around, a visit to a brothel and Munnia getting is on with Babban once non-with-standing.
Dedh Ishqiya for me has everything to be a cult classic, BO result be damned.

I think the reason it is flopping in India is because in India people go to the cinema as a family and prefer a movie where you can take your children with you. Because of a lot of adult situations in this film, I would not recommend you take your kids to see this. Dhoom 3 or Krissh 3 are typical Bollywood masala fare that the whole family can watch together. People think this is going to be on DVD or Pay-per-view in a few weeks and they can catch it when the kids are asleep. In any case, this was a low budget movie which will recover its investment. Everybody that has acted, directed has won critical acclaim and I see a bright future ahead for them. I see this going on to become a cult classic.

Excuse me, mogambo, but DI is not particularly low-budget. According to Boxofficeindia, its budget is twice that of its rival Yaraarin, and yet its in-India revenue is merely 2/3rds as much. But DI is also playing in America, and Y is not. I suppose this could be the case, but just few months ago Grand masti made it into 100 crore club.I understand that Dedh Ishqiya is a film aimed at certain audience, but still. Apart from two scenes there is nothing "unsafe" with it. And first Ishqiya was a hit - even though it was full of sex and references to it. I agree that in the course of time nobody will remember the BO number and I trust the film will be appreciated. it is definitely one of the kind.

It's disappointing to learn that this isn't doing well. I think the use of Urdu might have a lot to do with that. Even Anupama Chopra, who's usually more thoughtful than the average reviewer, made a comment about the film being difficult to understand on The Front Row. Anyway, I'd love to go see this but it's not playing anywhere near me.

I've heard this from a few different places, and I don't understand what the problem is if it's subtitled. If it's not subtitled I could see it being an issue, but if it is, is it the fact that it's Urdu that's irking people? I really don't get it.

We all watch subtitled films all the time, so it's nothing to us, but I can see it could put people off who don't do that. And the subtitles are in English, which is not the first language of most of the audience.

And thinking about it, I do watch my BW/foreign movies on dvd rather than in a movie theatre, so I at least have the ability to rewind or pause to catch up with subtitles, which I probably do a lot more than I realise.

DI is still in theatres for a second week, no longer competing against D3. A film called Karle Pyaar Karle is also here.
Box Office India says DI earned 18 crore in seven days (10 weekend, 2 per day for four weekdays) so it is not a disaster. It is holding up well, so there is hope for next weekend. Its rival Y grossed 25, but is dropping off.

I liked seeing Madhuri again. I liked the twist with her character and her character's soulmate. Really thoughtful for Bollywood. (I know we can put spoilers here but I really don't want to spoil it for anyone who doesn't know.) I liked the characterization. I liked Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. I liked the Muslim aristocratic feel and the Urdu shayari kind of stuff, the nawabs and the begum all that. I haven't seen Ishqiya, but I didn't feel I had to have to understand this movie.
I didn't like a scene of violence against women.
My rating: 8/10, B

According to BO India it made around 25 crore on home ground and boxoffiecapsule states the world-wide collections are around 32 crore nett. Film should also get something in addition for music and sattelite rights. I am not sure about the status of it, but it is not a flop (at least that is something....)
This film was the best in a long long time in bollywood. It deserved better.
