We started this particular sub addiction after watching Billu (Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta, SRK) and then discovering it was a remake of a Malayalam film, Kadha Parayumbol. (Sreenivasan, Meena, Mammootty). I then went on a quest to find a copy of the original, which started our thing of seeking out remakes of movies we like - sort of "the film's not over, it's just in a different language, with different actors [sometimes], and some regional differences thrown in."
Pokiri (Telugu: Mahesh Babu, Ileana D'Cruz), led to Pokkiri (Tamil: Vijay, Asin), then Wanted (Hindi: Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia), and Porki (Kannada: Darshan, Pranitha, Ashish Vidyarthi subbing for Prakash Raj in the previous three)
Manichitrathazhu (Malayalam: Mohanlal, Shobhana), Chandramukhi (Tamil: Rajnikanth, Jyothika), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (Hindi: Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan)
Vikramarkudu (Telugu: Ravi Teja, Anushka Shetty), Siruthai (Tamil: Karthi, Tamannaah), Rowdy Rathore (Hindi: Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha)
Kaavalan (Tamil: Vijay, Asin), Bodyguard (Hindi: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor)
Maryada Ramanna (Telugu: Sunil, Saloni Aswani), Son of Sardaar (Hindi: Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha)
Ready (Telugu: Ram, Genelia D'Souza), Ready (Hindi: Salman Khan, Asin)
I'm sure there are more out there I haven't come across, or noticed the connection. We like to see how the story changes (or not), depending on which cinema - and also the leads. Boy, ol' Salman can't complain at the end of the day, SI remakes seem to agree with him......

Vasu, who went on to direct Chandramukhi. Kadha Parayumbol was remade in Tamil as Kuselan.Kaavalan and Bodyguard (also remade in Telugu with the same title) were remakes of the Malayalam film Bodyguard. The Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi versions were directed by Siddique. Maryada Ramanna was a remake of the Buster Keaton film Our Hospitality.

^ Yes, it's amazing how perfectly the family feud story in Our Hospitality translates to Telugu cinema, where families always seem to be killing each other One more addition: Ready was remade in Kannada as Raam and in Tamil as Uthama Puthiran

One of our first and favorite Telugu movies was Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (Siddharth, Trisha), which apparently was inspired by older Hindi films. Other versions in our collection, Something Something......Unakkum Enakkum (Tamil: Jayam Ravi, Trisha), Tera Mera Ki Rishta (Punjabi: Jimmy Shergill, Kulraj Randhawa), and Ramaiya Vastavaiya (Hindi: Girish Kumar, Shruti Hassan).

A Wednesday was remade in telugu as Eenadu and tamil as Unnai Pol Uruvan. (tamil and telugu remakes have a slightly different casting)
Then there are also Raavanan (tamil) and Raavan (hindi). (simultanously filmed by Mani Ratnam; also with different casting choices and with different wardrobe choices setting Raavanan more in south india.)

I've seen at least one movie each from the Thuppaki, NVND, Vikramarkudu, Pokkiri and Manichitrathazhu cycles. Special 26, which I own, is apparently being remade in Tamil by the director of Vettai. OMG, which I haven't seen but I know a lot of people here have, is being remade in Telugu with Venkatesh as Krishna and in Kannada with Sudeep as...something, not sure which of the main roles.
Vedam was remade in Tamil by the same director as Vaanam, with Anushka Shetty reprising her role, and Prakash Raj taking on Manoj Bajpai's role (the only reason I'm tempted to see it, since the younger male leads did not seem as formidable as Allu Arjun and Manoj Manchu).
Just about anything directed by A. R. Murgadoss either has already gotten or will get a remake. It feels like I have seen or will see all of them except Ghajini.
The Telugu film Ooriki Monagadu, remade as the Himmatwalas. Devudu Chesina Manushulu, remade as Takkar in 1980 with a rocking R.D.Burman soundtrack (the reason I watched Takkar), Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman (the other two reasons I watched it) and Jeetendra and Jayaprada. Naya Din Naya Raat, with Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri (not recommended) remake of some Tamil/Telugu films I don't feel like looking up. Of my other Sanjeev films, I know for a fact that Paras is based on a Tamil film and Swayamvar on a Telugu one. Don't let anyone tell you that this is a new trend in Bollywood.

I'm a little bit intrigued by these, since I liked OMG. Was Sudeep the bad guy in Eega, or am I thinking of someone else?

Yes, that's Sudeep...he seems to do "character" roles in Tamil/Telugu movies, but in his native Karnataka he's basically the designated youngish, dashing lead guy who does remakes of Bollywood/Kollywood/Tollywood movies.

Ok, pencil me in for that version, then. I'm going to assume he's got the God role, though I'm having a difficult time trying to picture it. Mind you, I thought Akki as God was both ridiculous and unworkable, and I was proved wrong there.
