Director S.S. Rajamouli already had a reputation for making unconventional films that turned out to be hits (Vikramarkudu, Yamadonga, Magadheera), but in 2012, he cemented his status as the craziest director in Andhra Pradesh by making a big budget special effects extravaganza with a relatively obscure cast, about a funny-annoying young loafer (Nani) who falls for a girl (Samantha) who is being pursued by a super-sleazy evil rich guy (Sudeep). Loafer gets killed and reincarnated as a housefly and sets out to harrass the baddie, in order to defend the girl and to avenge his own murder. It was a super hit, and we had a thread for it on the old forums. www.bollywhat-forum.com/index.php?topic=34299.0
The Malayalam dubbed version seems to be available legitimately on youtube, but without subs:
I personally had a lot of the same issues with it that I had with Magadheera: a fairly boring first half that exists to offer some kind of explanation and emotional resonance for the weird, wild, over-the-top second half, and villains who are so unpleasant that they stop being fun to watch. I also found the lead pair kind of bland. But most people liked it. We had an interesting discussion on why the hero reincarnated as a fly.
He's certainly not your average Tollywood hero from the get-go, and I appreciate the theme of little creatures being capable of big feats (albeit gruesome revenge).
As he's dying, Bindu calls and we can hear her leaving a message, where she says "I love you. Come back soon." So I thought the idea was that returning as a fly was just the quickest way to get back to her.
