I guess I will start this one again as it is a big part of my life and love feedback from others. I do spend a lot of time on reddit reading about this subject. 10 years ago I was having health problems, way overweight and no real reason for it if just calories were counted and was told by a doctor I was just getting old and my metabolism was a mess and I should take a lot of drugs to help with my asthma. migraines, joint pain, sinus allergies, tachycardia, borderline high blood pressure etc.
I heard a rumor about High Fructose Corn Syrup and read labels. I thought I was eating healthy. No fast food, no soda etc. It was in my bread, yogurt, cereal, granola bars etc. I quit it cold turkey. I didn't change my diet, I just changed ingredients. All the above health problems were gone with in a month and over 18 months I lost 50 lbs.
Two years ago I started having stomach problems. Mostly indigestion and I have always liked naps. But brain fog was starting. It got worse over the course of time and once again I was reading online and read about wheat. Decided to try quitting it last January 2013. Within three days, my indigestion was gone, brain fog gone, haven't had a nap since, and my arthritis was gone in three days. For awhile I was making substitutes for the sweets, cake with almomd flour etc, and then decided to try quitting all sugar but fruit. THAT was hard as I have always been a hard cor sugar junkie. But I did it!!!! Now been about 6 month, I think. Though I did eat a whole package of gluten free cookies in Aspen last September.
Now lost more weight and for the first time in 30 years am into regular sizes. I feel wonderful. Can't go back as the three time I have had wheat since, I have seriously gotten sick with stomach pain. Twice due to bad waitresses, once on purpose to see what would happen for sure.
My memory has improved tremendously. At my age it is supposed to be going the other way. Now I am reading grains and sugar and not enough of the good fat may be linked to dementia and Alzheimer's. I believe it at this point. The people I know who are old and still sharp, don't eat sugar and bread and love their meat.
So now I am 90% Paleo. My "cheats" are my organic oat bran cereal for breakfast, 4 ounces of yogurt a day, occasional hummus with nut thin crackers, and organic potatoes. I have lost weight with meals like bacon and potatoes. Last night it was nitrate free sausage and eggs and a squash all cooked in the same pan.
Any other stories?
