I found this in the BBC Hindi entertainment section, and tried looking for it in English, but no luck. Seems like a strange story, and it's hard to believe this court case has been ongoing for 20 years. Seems like a total waste of resources! Although this matter was to be decided on the 30th of June, I haven't been able to find an update on the court's decision about it anywhere, though.
Court Tough On Shilpa Shetty because of line, “A kiss in exchange for U.P.-Bihar”
The search is on for film actress Shilpa Shetty in Jharkhand's Pakur court.
It will be decided on the 30th of June whether the court will issue an attachment order.
This investigation is being conducted against Shilpa Shetty because of her film, Chhote Sarkar, released in 1996.
In this movie, she danced to the line, “Loan me a kiss and take U.P.-Bihar in exchange” (ek chumma tu mujhko udhaar de de aur badle mein UP Bihar le le).
In 1997, lawyers from a local institution, the Young Lawyers Association, notably M.M. Tiwari and several others, started a case against Shilpa Shetty.
Film actor Govinda is also a co-accused in the matter.
The court of Pakur's Chief Judicial Magistrate, Akhilesh Kumar, is currently hearing the case.
At the time the case started, Pakur was still a part of Bihar (before the state of Jharkhand was created using some territory from Bihar). The lawyers accuse Shilpa Shetty of degrading Bihar in the song.
M.M. Tiwari told the BBC that during the hearing of this nineteen year long case, the court issued a non-bailable warrant for Shilpa Shetty and Govinda on 5th May 2001. Both film stars filed against this decision in the Ranchi High Court. The high court overturned the lower court's decision, and since then, the matter has been before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Pakur.
Shilpa is being accused of non-attendance in court.
Advocate M.M. Tiwari said that the accusation is being taken seriously and the court has set the 30th June as the date to hear the issue.
If Shilpa Shetty and Govinda are not present in court this day, then there will be an appeal for a seizure of immovable assets (to force their appearance before the court).
