Chennai Express starring ShahRukh Khan and Deepika Padukone released on August 8, 2013. It is directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Gauri Khan.
Chennai Express is about Rahul's journey from Mumbai to Rameshwaram to immerse his grandfathers ashes and what happens along the way after he meets the daughter of a local don (Deepika).

I saw this one twice when it was in the theater. Loved it. I have the DVD now, as I always buy the Shah Rukh Khan films. Comedy friend has not seen it. So that is on the agenda for tonight. She used to go to the theater with us, but decided that if it is good, I will always watch it a second time.

I finally saw it and I had a blast! I rarely laugh out loud watching comedies, but I was in splits by the time he pulls the three goondas on the train already!
There are plot holes craters and WTF stuff involved, but I did not mind, because the film never promised to be highly intelectual. Just fun. And it delivers on that level.
My baby Shahrukh.... the last time I REALLY thought he was brilliant and I loved him was way back in Om Shanti Om!!! All that came after it was just half-hearted, annoying and pretentious really. With Chennai Express I have my lovable SRK back, even though there were few scenes where he was just way too OTT even for himself.... I liked they made him at least 40, and i hope he will keep this trend going. His pairing with Deepika, also because they did not pretend he was younger, was also bearable, at times even adorable. Love between people with age difference happens. (I guess more than that my peeve with bollywood is how they try to convince me an over 40 actor is chokra jawaan). And Deepika in her turn was really good, I even dare say the soul of the whole film.

We loved all the insider joking about previous SRK movies, but liked it on its own merits as an all around entertainer. Since we got semi-addicted to South Indian cinema as well, the Tamil/Hindi (Miss Sub Title) running jokes were funny to us as well. The Lungi Dance tribute to Rajni Sir may have had it's roots in marketing, but we still thought it was awesome as a tribute to the actor. Can't think of a Hollywood equivalent outside of an awards show tribute.

I finally found the time to watch a film this weekend and picked this one since it's streaming on Netflix. It was fun for the most part. It rolled along merrily at a good pace, and it did a good job of keeping things light. The last fight scene was a bit too drawn out and seemed to fit awkwardly with the rest of the film. {Click to view!}The other 90% of the film seemed to thrive on tearing up notions of conventional manliness, what with Meenamma being the brains behind every scheme and rescuing Rahul out of sticky situations, but the ending seemed to say that a man isn't a real mard until he gets into a no-holds-barred physical fight.
I think the film did a fair job of debunking some popular north Indian myths about the south, like no one understands Hindi there ( several characters in key situations reveal that they do), but unfortunately also keeps some alive ( like the majority of the men are scruffy and unattractive). Aside from all the movie references that were done through dialogue and song, I also thought I spotted a few visual references. The body of water that Rahul and Meena drive past after getting off the train and meeting her dad's party reminded me of the famous scene from Swades where SRK rides a boat after meeting the poor farmer's family. In the final fight scene {Spoiler}SRK is beaten up and he falls to the ground and there is a lingering shot of his face with a glazed, dead look in his eyes, which was very reminiscent of the final scene in Devdas, and when {Spoiler}SRK finally has Thangaballi cornered, and the latter is sprawled out on the ground, with SRK holding a machete at his throat, it reminded me of Jodhaa Akbar, when Emperor Jalal had the villain (played by the same actor) in exactly the same position.

I really enjoyed this movie. I had to watch it all alone recently because my whole family had watched it to the point of tedium thanks to my 4 year old niece. So I put it on while doing other chores, and was pleasantly surprised at how funny it was.
The DDLJ train catching scene was definitely the hook for me. Also loved the joke where Deepika's dad says something, and SRK with his teeth clenched, asks Deepika, "What did he say about my mom?"
Beautiful scenery, and gorgeous picturization of the song "Titli."

My 12 yr old daughter and I just watched this. We laugh a lot and I really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the songs and picturizations, and all the references to SRK's other movies. I have seen the criticism on the movie, and I was worried about it, but I am so glad that I watched it. I realize that there are hugh plot holes, but I really wasn't expecting an Oscar worthy movie. (The Vigil Idiot was very unkind.) Chennai Express was so much better than Jab Tak Hai Jaan. I felt that SRK and Deepika a least had some chemistry. I really think that SRK does his best work in comedy roles, where he is poking fun of himself. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I bought the DVD.

I rewatched this over the weekend and enjoyed it again. Wish I could change the last 15 minutes.
Things that jumped at me this time round: - in some parts, esp. the songs, the colors looked gaudy and unrealistic on DVD, something I hadn't noticed while watching the movie in the theater, - that actually went along quite well with the surreal feel of certain parts and the fairy tale village of nice and happy people,
- maybe some of you remember I brought up the question in the old forum on how Rahul was transported to the ship at night when the room he wakes up in looks exactly like the room he falls asleep in. Well, the solution is simple - the Sardar brings him to the ship (no idea how), so he does wake up where he fell asleep and isn't being moved around.
